Craigslist Scam??

I have a nice Chris King hub listed on Craigslist and a guy in Colorado wants me to ship it to him. He hasn't asked any questions concerning the hub and he hasn't haggled with the price, he says he will send paypal payment today and he even sent me his ebay ID to check him out there which is the same as his email address. I think this covers all the bases, but for some reason I'm still suspicious, maybe it's because I have never shipped anything off Craigslist.

Am I overlooking anything guys? I'm just wondering if there is a scam out there I'm not aware of. What would you do?

Key word with Craigslist is LOCAL.. if you cant see the person don't deal with him...

You can always ask him for his phone number, and straight up talk to him like a humans do?

You can tell really quick if a person is full of BS just by talking to him/her...

how local? i read CL ads in various markets regularly.

doesn't sound like a scam to me. if he pays with paypal then you are covered.

if you get instant payment, no problem.. if you get paypal confirmation of payment in progress wait until you get the money in your account before you ship

For a low dollar item like this, I wouldn't personally sweat it a bit.

A couple of ways the scam works;
1 - they send you money from a hacked Paypal account, you ship the item, then the real account holder discovers the theft, reports it to Paypal and the money is refunded from your account
2 - they send you a fake Paypal email saying money has been sent but you have to click on a link to verify the transaction - which leads you to a fake but real looking Paypal log-in page that you log into -- and you just got your account hacked
3 - they send you money from a real Paypal account, ask you to ship to a certain address, then file a chargeback. If you did not check with Paypal that the address they gave you was the "verified" address and you sent anywhere but the verified address, they claim they never received the item and Paypal refunds them. It doesn't matter if you have proof it was delivered to the other address along with an email from the buyer telling you to ship to that address. If you ship anywhere but the verified Paypal mailing address, you have NO protection and Paypal will always side with the buyer.

There are now websites that let you search all of CL for an item you are looking for. I like Craiggers.com. Because of this relatively recent development, I think more people will be inquiring off CL that are interested in having items shipped. I have done it for a few items now. It sounds legit to me.

Insist on a phone call from an unblocked number.
Scammers will never talk to you on the phone......they want to do the transaction all by email.

If you really want a risk free transaction have the guy send you a US Postal Money Order that you cash at the
Post Office before you mail off the part.

Hmmm, awesome advice guys, I think I will ask for a phone call and definately send to the verified address. He did send the money already (or at least I got an email he sent the money) so on to phase two.

go directly to paypal's website ( not following any email links ) and log in, transfer to bank account.. if that all goes well it's good to go imo.

How long after it clears your account and seams safe does PayPal have to take it back if it was fraudulent?

Seems like taking a chance?

Nothings safe anymore-my 90 year old mother was debited after a check cleared and 4 months later they took it back.

There are no regulations covering Paypal. They make the rules and the exceptions to the rules. Do a search of the 1000's of disputes against Paypal. The education is worth it.

I have no idea what your banking regulations are? You will often find banks break the rules and unless you call them on it, they keep your money. I would make sure the bank could legally do that to your mother?
I got a certified cheque for a car. I deposited in my bank. 1 day later the funds were taken out of my account. The buyer claimed the car was stolen. All he had to do was sign a declaration and his funds were returned. I did get the funds, but it took months and cost me legal fees. That is why I have accepted only bank drafts or cash since that day.
40 years ago, I had 2 bank managers make 2 serious mistakes in the $50-$70K range. Both lost their jobs for breaking the rules and I received my funds, with compensation. I co-signed for an employee who paid the loan in full and then defaulted on a second loan I had not signed on. The banker took the funds from my account. Second matter was another certified cheque from a law firm. Certified cheques can go sideways on you for many reasons. Taking a bank to court for failing to honor a cheque they have certified is not easy. I had to get a lawyer both times.
A few years ago a local bank employee was stealing funds from clients and a friend was called in to have his account straightened out. There was actually $4000 more in his huge account than his true balance. She had been using his account as a place to move funds in/out. They asked him to authorize the debit for the $4k and to sign a very complicated statement, covering months of illegal activity, he was unaware of. He asked to have a copy of the statement for his lawyer to review. The bank refused, saying it was an internal matter. He had his lawyer ask for the statement and when they refused, close the account and kept the $4000. The bank did not object. I found the same bank had $3,200 belonging to a friend of mine in a "property tax account" 6 months after I sold his house with a PA. An employee/friend informed me of this account. The taxes had always been paid on time. The money had been tacked onto his mortgage payments over 25 years, to cover any property taxes that he may have neglected. Again, I had to get a lawyer to get the $3,200. The house owner was sailing the south seas. The bank manager claimed my PA did not cover the separate tax account, only the mortgage account. Wrong

did you end up talking to the person? You can also just Google up the name or check the email here , most of these scammers information has been made public somewhere on-line so looking it up will tell you if it's a scam or not 80% of the time

Also watch out with paypal, because the buyer is always right and unless you're dealing through ebay their policies are pretty much on the buyer's side (this is because paypal belongs to ebay)
