Also you completely left out fatbike hubmotors that aren't geared which are a great option.
 
I agree, I tried to read it a day or so ago, but I found it to be practically impenetrable, as if he was being paid by the word! The author may be quite the researcher, but perhaps not so much of a writer.
 
To make a long story short. Look back at the personal computer market in the 70's. 80's, and 90's.

Hundreds of companies large and small pop up targeting various market segments: big name manufactures, well funded startups, small shops struggling to make rent on their storefronts, and hackers building stuff in the garage.

Over time consumers begin to understand what they need and want in a computer. Vendors start to figure out how to meet those needs.

Competition drive down the cost of important technologies....
