Custom extended frame trike with 5304 mid drive

I have a 5304 motor sitting around doing nothing. I don't like the Idea of lacing it to a 20' trike wheel for a number of reasons. The 1st being its dam heavy and not the easiest thing to lace up to a 20" wheel and remain strong and reliable. The 2nd and most important is the cogging resistance and lack of free wheeling. The final being the limited speed with a 20" wheel, unless you go to very high voltages.

The idea....would require a custom built trike from ground up.Most likely kmx style square tube frame for simplicity. What about fitting a welded -locked BMX free wheel to the right hand side of the 5304 side cover. Mount the 5304 in a custom trike frame with and extended mid section, just behind the seat. Then run a chain to a jack shaft that is made from a sram 3x7 dual drive disk brake version. Run a single sprocket on the 7 speed t side and a ISO disk brake to bmx free wheel adaptor on the other. Powering a single left hand side sprocket mounted to the rear disk brake mount in the rear hub.

This way you have the silence and torque of the Big 5304, The weight would be out of the rear wheel and centred on the trike. 3 speed gearbox and best of all free wheeling when the motor is off.

I don't think the scram dual drive could hand huge power but could be a quiet and efficient e trike. Most of the gearing would be 1-1 until the final drive .

Potential issues are... shearing off the free-wheel hub from the side cover of the 5304. the castings are sometimes week.Would need to pin or lock the right had side 1st free-wheel as it will want to come undone.Vibration through the frame having such a big flywheel (5304) spinning away if its not balanced although I don't think it will be a issue. finding a single sprocket and adaptor for the 7 speed cassette side of the sram dual drive

Is you thread about the 5304 or 5404 ?

maybe just review the title

Sounds like an interesting approach, Kurt. I'll be interested in how you keep that first freewheel locked on. I flipped my motor around so the cog is screwed onto the brake side, but that required me to loop the chain under the cog instead of over it. If I were to do another one I rather do it the other way, which would have eliminated one idler on my setup.

The new TerraTrike Rover has a square frame and an extension available. It's a low end trike, but I think it would be a good candidate for a mid-drive.

Good luck with your build. :D

No prob..

It's just that these 5404 motor are very rare and many are searching for them...
