As per the title, I have a 2009 Cannondale Hooligan which I bought second hand, and have since upgraded.

It has 20" wheels, Hydraulic Disc Brakes, an Alfine Hub Dynamo in the front and an Alfine 8 Speed Hub Gear at the back, and (probably most important) a Cannondale Double Wedge Eccentric Bottom Bracket.

This is Cannondale's PDF about their EBB
http://media.cannondale.com/media/Manuals/2004_eccentric_double_wedge_owners_manual_supplement_en.pdf

I am unsure of the exact size of the bracket as I haven't measured it.

Obviously this type of BB will preclude using some mid-drive systems - I'm thinking of the Vivax/Gruber Assist particularly, which is a pity as I like this design.

I don't mind adding a chain tensioner if required, but I would also like to avoid anything too "ugly".

Can anyone suggest anything that would fit?

This is my bike.

I'm not an expert...but I think you need to provide a lot more information if you want any of the real experts in here to help you out. Not so much about the bike but more of what your needs are and what you are looking to get out of your mid-drive...i.e. speed, distance, terrain, to name a few.

You can also go to electricbike.com and search for--- 10 Mid-Drive Kits for DIY Electric Bikes....it now has a list of over 20 different types of mid-drive kits to chose from...Some are listed with very detailed information, some your going to have to google and read up on.

Hope that can help get you started.

This is just an eccentric bottom bracket. Lots of tandems have something similar. You could probably use the ubiquitous Bafang mid-drive, if you rotate the eccentric so the crank is near the bottom/front of the shell. Obviously, you will have limited chain adjustment. You can alleviate that problem to some degree with a half link for your chain. KMC makes half links for 1/8" and 3/32" chain.

The only Hooligan i have seen had an astro drive from Davinci on it.
It goes pretty fast if required.

Do you mean these?

If so, that looks interesting - but also a bit out of my league in both time and expertise (and probably money too)

Thanks though.

Fair comment on usage,

This is mainly a commuter - but I want it to be fun and fast. My commute is short (½ hour by bike, 10 mins in car when no traffic), and fairly flat. But there are a couple of not steep, but very long drawn out hills too.

As for the article, did you mean this:

https://www.electricbike.com/mid-drive-kits/

If so, I found that before signing up here - then researched each item, but couldn't find any specific info on EBB's - even emailed some companies that supply/fit + still waiting for replies.

My primary concern was working out which kits would fit, then working out which of those would best suit my needs.

Yes, the Bafang 8fun is rating quite highly on my novice radar. Mainly because it is a compact unit and looks factory.

Unless anything else steps up or I get a reply to an email, it looks like I might have to take a punt on a BBS01 or BBS02

Hey CmdrBond,

Yeah just wanted to tell you what I was told when I asked a similar question....I was told I should make my location known, describe the terrain, and the speeds I'd like to reach etc. etc....along with distance to help pick a battery pack.

Knowing your BB width will obviously help you eliminate all the mid-drives that won't accommodate your bike, and narrow down your choices. The only one I know of that has multiple choices in BB mount width (68mm, 73mm, 78mm, and 100mm) is the 'LightningRods'.... I'm assuming that wont fit your EBB?

But since its main usage will be commuting, no need to go with something big, powerful, expensive, and labor intense anyway.

And yes, that was the article I was referring to, sorry it didn't help you...yeah you may be in a bit of a pickle with your EBB, so now I understand your wanting to find a kit to fit first.

Well hope you find what you are looking for and get to use it on the bike you want...sorry I couldn't help, but I'll submit this reply, if anything, to move it back up to the front of the line for ya.

Joe

Thanks.

I'm waiting on some emails - and then I'll come back and ask some more questions - but so far it's looking plausible, which is good.
