I really don't care to ride around with a giant LCD3 screen on my bike at all time (theft magnet!), but I realize that you HAVE to use the LCD3 or LCD5 to dial in the PAS settings.

Can I change the PAS settings with the display and then disconnect the display? Will the s12s controller remember the settings by any chance?

You don't have to worry about theft. Instead of using the plastic bracket. you can easily make a much stronger one out of aluminium sheet. Drill two holes for the screws and Dremmel a big hole the size of the stem cap, then you can use the stem cap to retain it. Mine's very rigid, so any thief will realise it's not going to come off.

Parameter C3 sets the the PAS level on power up (0-5 or remember last level). I'm not sure if this is stored in the controller or LCD though. If you really don't want the LCD there you can buy an Arduino Pro Mini for <$2, program it to output your desired settings (very easy) and connect it to the display connector.
