OK, not sure what the use of the thread is............

That artical says it is the fastest motor in the world "By a long shot". Not true. Slot car motors run over 100k. Heck, I have one brushless RC motor that wound out over 100k.

Not sure what the big deal is.

I maxed my laser tach on a small 5,200kv brushless inrunner. Tach just blinking 140,000rpm.

I don't know who this guy is trying to fool.

Maybe was speaking in the context of vacuums? Then the article itself would be the reason that that quote reads like it does...

I wouldn't dismiss this as hype. Probably just poor reporting. Dyson is a first-rate engineer, inventor and entrepreneur. I'd guess the main reason he's exploring the use of switched reluctance motors is to minimise weight. They have a lot of potential, but the control technology is challenging, from what I've read.

Its not the technology that's the issue for me in that artical. It is the blatant lie about this being the highest RPM motor "By a long stretch". That is pure crap. I am sorry, I just get a little hot under the collar about statements like that. When something is not true, it is NOT TRUE. Being a great engineer is no excuse for false statements. 100,000 RPM is high, but not the highest achieved RPM by a long stretch (to use their terminology).

It looks like a cute vacuum and I am sure it will have crazy high power for its size with that RPM. But, again, I go back to the statement that this motor is the fastest motor "By a long stretch".

Not even close........... :?

"...researchers at ETH Zurich have now developed a drive system which achieves speeds of over 500,000 revolutions per minute, generating 100 watts of drive power and is not much bigger than a box of matches. The rotor has a titanium sleeve construction that is capable of withstanding extreme centrifugal forces. A low-loss stator ensures maximum levels of efficiency, and the ultra-compact electronic circuitry is digitally controlled..."

THIS JUST IN ! the SHOCKING revelation caught on videotape ! In an unprescedented discovery...a bear was found defecating IN THE WOODS !! In a Larry King exclusive, the age old question is no longer a mystery ! And now, some comments from our board of experts on this suprising development. Marlin Perkins from the San Diego zoo, in your entire life, have you ever.....

I hate it when people twist facts as well, I'm just suggesting, as Link did, that he was quoted out of context. Other articles indicate he was talking specifically about vacuum cleaners and other household appliances.

spinningmagnets,

They improved the design since then and produced a motor which spins over 1'000'000rpm!

I "think" it was Mae West who said "Theres no such thing as bad publicity" (meaning all publicity is good)

After all, here we are, an electric bicycle forum, talking about a Dyson vacuum cleaner motor ! Dyson trolled the world, and we took the bait ! In my response, I was just having a bit of fun. But I think he did his job, as I will now remember that Dyson has a new hand-held cordless vacuum with a very high RPM motor.

Yes, and you will remember is uses the fastest motor in the world "By a long stretch".
