Can anyone recommend a specific 12V switchmode from a common site like dealextreme or something that definitely works down to 45V? I've bought wo different ones that don't turn on until about 90V!
 
Look on the Meanwell site, they do some...I think they are the same or similar to the ones Lyen sells. they only go up to 60volt input, but i am sure they work fine at 45 volt

How many amps?

There's no real way to tell other than acutally testing one. I have some that will turn on as low as 20v.
 
the $10 one I got on fleabay works down to around 32 volts, but its recovery time under load seems to slow down quite a bit at that voltage, good for constant loads, but not quick pulsating ones.
 
3 amps would do. 5 amps would be great. I've tried two that didn't work so well, just wanted to find one I can be confident to buy

Simple solution. Start running 100V and not only is the problem solved, but you get to have more fun too. :)
