I live in the UK , doesnt seem to be the same interest in EVs over here as in the USA, I would like to build a small electric car but having difficulty finding a motor for my project, I have built my own DC controller and the car would weigh less than a ton, have seen lots of projects on U tube but no details on the build its like its secret but its suppose to be enviro friendly isnt it, should be promoting zero emission cars, can anyone help me make the right choice

Under a ton...do you already have a car selected? will it be rear wheel drive (RWD) or front (FWD)?

Will you replace the engine with a motor by attaching the motor to the stock transmission? What is the top speed you wish to attain? Top speed is greatly affected by the gearing available, and the volts of the system.

What battery chemistry do you feel you can afford? Lead/Acid is still the most affordable, but weight and bulk may limit you to 72V-108V, which in turn may affect top speed possible.

Are you familiar with "EV Album"? you may find a build similar to what you wish to accomplish, and that can save you a great deal of time during your research, or at the very least give a realistic baseline from which to compare your goals with the working builds that others have produced.

A lot of people in the US (and in Oz) use the Netgain Warp motors.

Didn't they have electric milk carts in the UK? Can you find a motor from one of those from a wrecking yard?

Thanks guys for your posts, havin difficuty in finding a milk float motor or large golf buggy motor, to your questions i have built my first controller for max 55 volts 600 amps , but looking for a 48 volt 20 hp motor, i will be using lead acid for my fist motor, i live about 2 miles from work so it will be great, also looking at solar power for topup whilst at home parked
Do you think i could buy one of these warp motors in the uk, with a small front wheel drive car will 20 hp suffice.

other ideas on my car are , hv headlights , hall effect coulomb counter for battery range, demisting the screen from waist energy from my controller, iam looking at controller mk2 a high voltage 3 phase system, but only circuit diagrams so far

Gav video documented the whole process here including sourcing a motor from overseas:
