DownTube Folders Mods, Pics, and Vids

I've always wanted disk brakes so I'll go that route, I know its more expensive, but oh well

Thanks for the compliments on the new hog

I will post the build on this bike when I start getting parts in.
For now, its going to be smaller ticket items till I get the moolah together for the go-fast gear.

Until then

" Old man mountain " brake pads made my BMX stop way.. WAAAAAY better. !!! for 15 $ it was well worth it . :)

It's not just about stopping power, itza boutza bling home slice! 8)

This is what i got so far. I'm going to find a way to attach a Cyclone 650W kit on there. Already ordered it. Can't wait till it come.

Disk brake front. Yes it's all about the bling
Changed out rear caliper to get matching black. will change to disk rear if i'll need it
Changed twist shifter to 7 speed shimano Acera rapid fire shifter. Think i'm going to order another one with 8 speed. Live and learn i guess
Going to change the rear to 8 speed shimano cassette
Going to need to switch to a regular rack system system and not use seat post. Probably going to drill 2 holes near the drop out.
Took off all decal because i love straight black. Too bad they moved to aluminum stem, otherwise i'd have a matching black painted steel stem.

BTW. If you guys find the stem move slightly or wobble. You can contact Yan and have them send you 2 nylon washer which will take up the slack in the folding mechanism of the stem. Works great.

Snazzy!

What disk brake system did you go with?

I'm also planning on switching out my rims with some anodized units along with some better rubber.
The nice thing is there's a really good network of BMX rims/tires on the market, so finding a replacement set of 20" shouldn't be too much of an issue.

We should rename this section of the forum, the Downtube conversion post!

What say you Ric :?:

Sure. How do I change the Subject Line...It would be cool to post all Downtube bike mods here...I'm all for it

All you need do is re-edit your first post and modify the subject line to whatever you want.

Those disc brakes and rear caliper are Promax one from my Schwinn S60. I'm trying to obtain a used set of Avid BB7 disc caliper. If i get those, it'll go on there.

Just updated my profile to include the new bike.
I've made a list of parts/components that I plan on adding in the next few months

1800VTX,
Man I sure hope the DownTube frame can handle that kind of Power. X5303 and 84V on this lite folder? Thats nuts but I like it. Make sure you get a video of the burnouts on those dubs......

Ric

It's actually going to be 56V vs 84V, this was after talking with jondoh, because I don't want to mess with the BMS on the packs themselves.

But yeah, an X5 on that wee little bike... should be interesting

I've got a few ideas on how to 'beef things up a bit' and will be tackling those before I even get the motor, should be fun!

Oh yah I was there that night when we fried the BMS trying to hook up 3S for some CRAZY 84v action. Instead we got a bunch of smoke......After all the checking my brother came to the conclusion that in order to go 84v we would have to bypass the BMS. Well John and I love the warranty on these V28's so we decided to leave well enough alone...

They've got an extended 5 year/2,000 charge warranty on these!

Yah only if you do not open them up or mess with the BMS. If you hook up two in series then your OK. Do 3 and the BMS fries. My brother took his apart, built a 52V pack and put them in his frame. Warranty was void once he opened the packs up and bypassed the BMS. John Ando and I already have saved $100 since we both each had a bad cell in one of our packs and Milwaukee replaced them...

That's what I'm sticking with then.. its going to be a 2s6p, so it should be alright.

Tesla, eat your heart out :!:

Yah you'll be fine with 56V. And if I owned a $100K Tesla those would be fightin words.......

Hey, hey, hey... don't get me wrong

Tesla is like the electric Godfather in my opinion

Mad props to the guy who invented AC, Radio, Remote Control, Radar, Florescent Bulbs, etc. etc. 8)
The guy was a certifiable genius.

On another note, I just came by this great website that is like one of the largest online retailers of bike parts, components, and accessories. Its in the UK (so everything is in pounds), but if you're looking for anything in particular, these guys might just have it..

What diameter rotor is that?

it's standard 160mm, 6" rotor. These small wheels doesn't need much to stop them. The stock cantilever brakes on these thing is impressive but they provide more of a jerky braking force and i like the gradual feel of disc brake. Let you modulate the brake force easier.

So if I decided on an 8" rotor, I'd probably need an adapter unit to adjust for the extra diameter.
Again, for me its about as much for show as it is go..er.. stop

I've come across a few custom milled rotors that should spice up the ride a bit. As soon as that order comes in and I get them installed I'll post some shots

joystix2..

You mentioned finding your batteries on another thread at $80 each (shipped).

Where the blood-blue-blazes did you find that deal :?: :?: :?:

Dude, That was a deal of a find but they have since bumped their prices up to $120....... Yikes. The lowest now was Amazon at $98....Still ouch..... The $80 deal was at http://www.toolup.com

1800vtx, By the way for some reason while I was cleaning my garage I found an old new box which has been sitting around for about 3 years. Inside was a brand new Shimano Deore Mech Disk brake assembly which I was going to put on one of my mod'd electric scooters when we were into them but never did. I saw that my front forks and rim had all the necessary mounting holes for disks brakes and within 30 minutes I had BLING like you're going to have.... Well everytihng went on straight forward except I had to find a longer brake cable.... Pics to come

Ric

joystix2..

Yeah I'm going to shoot for a mechanical vs a hydraulic setup for both front and back as well (easier to fix when out and about).

As for that battery deal, whoa! A 50% markup since you got them? That's insane! Talk about price gouging
What time of the year did you get your batteries at that $80 price?

LOOK FORWARD TO THE PICS!

I got them in late April. Before that they were all around $100+ each everywhere. And now everywhere I've looked they are $100+ each.

My Shimano Deore I installed is SWEEET. Kinda funny looking since the tires so small at 20". The disk housing looks huge. The stopping power is real nice though...
