I have been racking my brain thinking of ways i can prevent my ebike from getting stolen when I'm out and about and locking it up.The only thing I'm opposed to is spray painting it rust color and making it look trashy. I'm going to list a few ideas, tell me what you all think and if anything could be added.

Location
1. Lock up in populated areas
2. avoid heavy crime areas
Locking
1. Multiple types of locks- dlock, heavy chain clock, sleeved lock
2. Locking should weave through front and back tires as well as frame.
3. Secure bike to strong post/metal bar
if bike rack is not available.
4. Lock up accessories if possible in safe compartment or take them with you.
Alarm/ tracking
1. Gps/celltower tracking-quality of these products vary. If your bike is stolen it will be able to track the bike as long as the signal is good. You can set it to track every 5 seconds or 15 minutes.
2. Motion sensitive alarm- when someone begins to mess with your bike the alarm sounds.

I am more than likely going to use all the things i listed, though i haven't decided if i am going to use both alarm and tracking features.

Am I missing anything?

Yeah, the one that works. trash bike.

Sadly, its the way it is everywhere, pretty gets stolen. Fortunately I rarely need to leave a bike where I can't eyeball it through a store window. When I vistit big box stores, it's so early the thieves are all sleeping off last nights meth binge.

Im not saying locks don't help, but some places a bike lasts 15 min locked up. Campuses are bike thief meccas. They know the class schedule gives em an hour to get your bike.

lol, If that's the case then somebody has to find another solution other than "trash bike".
I don't care I'll put lo-jack on it. How about automated electrocution or pepper spray? How about a motion sensing alarm that makes your ears bleed if you are within 1 foot of the bicycle? I could have a sign like this "touching bicycle will cause electric shock and even death".

I do like the idea of going early in the morning, to bad I am a night owl, but i might be able to make that work. Good points as always dogman :)

We know how KFF works?

how about KFB (balls)

anode and cathode wired into the seat in case the handlebar doesn't kill ya ?

we have the technology and the volts and amps and steel!

new app for the iPhone !

watching the prick who stole your bike get electrocuted and fall under a bus!

priceless

My ebike security consists of:

At home outside unlocked, my dog will bark and I'll go outside and shoot them. Actually the big debate is weapon choice, pump shotgun- outstanding effectiveness even without firing, baseball bat- very effective in the right hands at close range, machete- again only close range, but severed at the wrist is what any thief deserves AFAIC. The weapons are just pleasant dreams anyway, because the locals are already terrified of our 10 month old puppy. He's an Akita/Husky mix, but the Akita dominates since he's already at 87lbs, and demonstrating strong protective instincts at such a young age has really impressed me. He totally accepts me as pack leader, but is pretty insistent that he's 2nd in command.

At quick stops away from the house unlocked, the pedal effort won't permit them to get far enough that a quick dash and my chain with a lock on the end won't end the theft attempt in short order.

Other locations all have outside security guards, and the bike is locked with a chain. Plus it's locked next to moto's that have much better parts resale value here, especially since no one has a clue as to the value of batteries.

My ebikes are such a novelty that they're a focus of interest and attention, not of theft, so the odds are way in my favor right off the bat.

Hmm sounds like using a key switch to turn the bike on might be a good idea as well. Especially for those quick jaunts into the store.

Too bad a pit bull woudn't fit inside my panniers

P.s. Motorino I checked out that instructable....Now that is very tempting  but the bike thief deserves to crash and burn and not anybody he might crash into as a result of being shocked. ha ha

The bests way to avoid any ebike stolen is to not make them attractive and too much visible when you are absent... and to always keep an eye on them and never leave them without surveillance when you are not at home. and to install dissuasive feature on it like an LED flashing or having these serial number that the police can add to your bike.

I preffer starting from the point that we dont know how capable are the thief.

So i start from the point that they are the best thief... assume they are smart so you will not be surprized. So i surestimate their capacity.

Think that if they want your ebike, they will.

That said, we are now considering the second option... finding your stolen ebike the fast way you can.

The GPS tracker and hidden loud alarm is the best way.

Using electricity to give a shock to the thief is not a really good idea since they could become frustrated and break it... or shocking you if you forget your alarm activated !

I think those were older kryptonite locks that were susceptible to that trick. The kryptonite faghetaboutit lock is pretty good and feels strong on my bike with hardly any room to jack it open with a car jack for instance, but to be honest I reckon a battery powered grinder with a cutting disc would get through it within a few minutes so your only fool proof protection is to watch it like a hawk

Having cut alot of chain with minimum effort with bolt cutters when I was hanging a lot of punchbags at my gym then most chain and padlock security can be cut through in around 10 seconds. A suggest a really thick chain as you would need massive bolt cutters or at least a few cutting discs to get through

I suppose you could give Gieco a call and see how much it is to insure it for a couple grand. That way if it does get stolen, you file a police repot, and get paid to build a new one.

I recommend just locking your front wheel to your frame.. with locking skewers or hex bolts filled with melted wax. Then you can just use a Fahgettaboutit Kryptonite lock through the front wheel. No one knows what to do with a heavy rear hub motor.. and there is not much market for desperate thieves

I know a member here was looking into this radio motorcycle alarm that notified you when something fishy was happening. I kinda want to try it

Wow! Cell Phone with a stun gun attached! That is the best instructable I have read in a LONG time!! :D 8)

The biggest problem I see is it's easily defeated with a thief wearing gloves, and there is always the chance that it ends up causing you legal problems.

Not to mention the chance of accidentally shocking yourself are pretty high.

Yeah, I have been meaning to up-date the post on my alarm, and so far it seems it was too cheap to be reliable, but I still love the concept, might just have to get one that is higher quality.

Oh, and to add to the OT, there is a fourth option, just make your bike too weird for anyone else to want it! Most people aren't sure what to make of recumbents much less try to ride one away or even steal it.

WHat if there was a circuit that would emit a shower of sparks upon touching the bike. a safe shower of sparks. Startling. I'm interested in this. let's do it.

disarmed with RFID.

Now your talking!!

I know there is someone here who would be able to build this! AW?

Someone would call the firemen, then you'd have to explain about your weird alarm system, or you'd come back to your bike and find it soaked wet.

More seriously and helpfull this time..

Pull the plug on the phase wires of the bike. Then plug in a jumper device that shorts all three phases. This makes the bike very very hard to pedal off on. It's already pretty heavy compared to regular bikes, so carrying it off becomes a bit harder too.

A lowjack like tracker could be helpfull. It has to be concealed, and you have to be paying for a service to get best results. ( bike is now miles away) Something for dogs is avaliable. And reasonably priced if you ride is worth thousands. Even a cheapie tracker of some kind, also avaliable for hunting dogs, would do the trick if the bike gets dumped in a block or two because it was so hard to ride off on. I think those radio tracking dog collars have a few miles range, maybe only a mile or so in city enviroment. Usually the thief has a truck or van close by and hauls ass. But the bike might still be local if the van is too far to ride the slogging bike.

Do use a good lock, but here in the US, with the economy trashed, the nice bikes are having their locks cut in broad daylight on campus. Like I said, they know the schedule, and 5 min with a cordless grinder is no big deal to them.

So too damn pretty is just asking for it. They know the diff, and they'll definitely target a quality bike. So if possible, park it next to a carbon frame beauty!
