Electric Harley.

I finally had a listen to the original video, why is it making this high frequency noise ? Is it from gears in the drivetrain ? I mean i cannot imagine them not using a proper sine wave controller... it looks like the motor is down low with the axle in the length of the bike, so there must be a 90 degree thingy like in a shaft driven bike. Are those noisy ?

I've never been so positive about something released by Harley Davidson. This could be a good sign for humanity...

Here's the full commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6F8O5A__Ds

Also the LA Times has some exclusive footage: http://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-hy-harley-davidson-electric-livewire-20140618-story.html

supposedly honda is going to use mission motors
the only holdup is agreeing whether mission makes the gear or they do
at least harley will be cool with letting mission make the gear here in san francisco

the first version is using the induction motor
which allows them to introduce a super sport with the magnet motor the next year
controller is the charger and charges 200 miles in 30 min

The commercial sets the perfect tone:
If you don't like this bike, you're an anti-American, freedom-hating, anti-innovation, draft-dodging, flag-burning commie parasite, milk-sop, stick-in-the-mud.

So, people will love it even if it's bad.

But it's electric, so it's good.

Exactly! Huge win for the EV in America!

Overall good news but...

That pig needs to go on a diet! It must be pushing 600 lbs.

nope 460 pounds

gas 2014 Sportster 584 pounds
gas 2014 Road King 814 pounds

They are playing the competition and slowing the transisition by only claiming it only has 53 miles of range.......
the top of the line model will do 130 miles at 70 mph

the heavy weight touring model in 4 years will go 200 miles at 70 mph. that is when the dc quick charge option will be available but even on 220V it will charge fast enough for most

“It does validate what we’ve been doing; it adds additional credibility to it. It is certainly going to draw more people’s attention to electric motorcycles. The marketing horsepower of Harley-Davidson is going to be able to do things for us that we can’t do on our own,” said Scot Harden, vice president of global marketing at Zero Motorcycles, the top seller of full-size, high-powered electric bikes.

Zero expects to sell 2,400 electric motorcycles this year, a drop in the bucket compared with the more than 260,000 conventional motorcycles sold last year by Harley.

But I thought loud pipes saved lives?

I like it but I don't see the average Harley guy wanting one. At least where I live I would say 90% of Harley riders are trying to see how obnoxious they can be. They would have to add artificial motor sounds to make them happy.

Well if you read the wired article they are actually quite pleased with the high frequency whine the motor makes as this apparently represents the Harley look and feel :?

Speaking of the motor, the LiveWire marks quite a departure from Harley’s signature sound. You don’t get the syncopated “potato, potato, potato” that is synonymous with a 60-degree V-twin engine. But even though it’s electric, and therefore has no engine, the LiveWire had to live up to Harley’s “look, sound, and feel” mantra. That took a lot of work, but company president and COO Matt Levatich insists the result is “not contrived.”

The high-pitched whir of the longitudinally-mounted, three-phase AC induction motor reverberates through the chassis, amplifying the sound. It starts off quietly, then builds in pitch and volume as the bike gains speed. It’s louder than you’d think, and though it’s not going to set off any car alarms, it’ll definitely make you smile.

HAHA. I almost spit my coffee out when I opened that. Too funny.

My Harley lovin' neighbor wouldn't know what to do. He would have to figure out a way to make it idle for half an hour every day (15 times a day) before he rides it.

Folks on forums are going to spit the same drivel about range like they do to all the current EVs on the market. Everyone wants what isn't out there. If you state 80 miles/charge, they'll complain that they need 100. If you state 250 miles/charge, they'll want 300.

Someone pinch me because HD was the last motorcycle company I'd think to produce an EV. :p

They have 'produced' several prototypes and a few select will 'test drive' them. This is the same scumball company that worked tariffs to gain market share. I don't trust them.

B-B-But... without that 'potato-potato-potato'-sound, what are they going to trademark?

Put some playing cards on it which hit the spokes.

Hey... that's my trademark sound

Does this mean that now we have to shave, wear proper helmets and smile and be pleasant?

I am sure Harley will come up with some made in Indonesia "colors" we can now wear.
