Epic Topic Nominations

Back again. Nothing should be auto pruned from General, or any other panel.
At worst, move it to "archive only no new inputs please" and leave the threads OPEN but DELETE any new inputs.
This would stop ongoing flame wars and such.

I recall, laboriously hand-transcribing, original text, nearly ten years ago.
It yet exists on the net on someone's site.

Just to make a point, I shall now retrieve that old text, with link (for that place may die),
and REPRINT the otherwise-to-be-lost info, into auto-pruning General, and don't you managers delete it, ever,
puh-leeeeze?

HOW TO PAINT YOUR WAGON

IMO, nothing should be pruned, ever, from ES panels.

I wish that were the way, too. I'd like to peer into endless sphere's distant past and I'm already disheartened to see that the oft-talked about "Empire thread" has disappeared. What was it about?!!! What was it like?!!!

Auto-pruning in certain sections, like the sales forums, seem pretty appropriate. The topics tend to be transient by their very nature. In other cases, if the problem might be one of data-storage, why not just prune the image data that takes up the bulk of data storage?

But, you know, this site does have a *lot* of brilliance. This is the first forum I've ever known to have a "Toxic discussion" category as an alternative to deletion and I think it's brilliant.

I Nominate this as an epic topic. :D

I think before this thread can be considered Epic, it needs atleast one flame war, a picture of a Dinosaur eating Obama, or someone to post a pic of a catgirl on a bike.

Wait, you mean like this?

Dude...
Bonus points for cosplay. This thread is now Epic.

I know that we want to do the right thing and keep it free.
I totally respect that.

I also know that some of us are more reckless with our money and would take great joy in contributing.
If you make me some kind of blinking laser-beam-flashing-lights around my Avatar I will donate $100 USD. :p
Even if the money were used to buy just one backup drive, that TB of data would hold every text conversation ever had on the forum.

Alternatively, I could offer the services of my own server at ixwebhosting.com (if you can figure out how to do it)
Deleted threads could get shuttled over there via some script.

Perhaps things that are deleted could be stripped of multimedia content and stored as raw text (as suggested above)
though I think the pictures often times are the best part.

I think the right thing to do is to let people buy a little 4 pixel by 20 pixel sign under their name that says:

Supporting Member or
Sugar Daddy or
Money Bags or
Show-off or
"custom message"

It could be done tastefully so that members who are not in a position to contribute do not have to feel bad.
Maybe give contributing members access to a more powerful search engine or let them have a lame little forum to themselves.

I bet you would be flush with cash and we would never have to delete anything ever again.
The process could be totally transparent.

. . . and so begins the lame war necessary for making a thread truly epic.
You could "donate" your overflow storage with a simple PM.
I'm sure cash transfers can also be arranged through that option.

Why not just start a bidding war for the flashiest avatar?
User names in coloured fonts could more thriftily distinguish the big spenders from the presumed chump-change leaches.
A VIP lounge is going too far.

Better filtering capabilities are more valuable than enhanced searches.

A discrete PM donation from me wont solve this problem but an idea posted on the public forum could.

I assume that you are being flippant but I think that is a great idea.
People will pay for "internet bling" and that is just a fact.
Money will solve the storage problem.

Tacky? Yes
Tasteless? Yes
Effective? Yes

Peer pressure works wonders.

While peer pressure may work wonders, if based on ones wallet and addiction, it doesn't do much to enhance the meritocracy that I perceive as this technological forum's basis for credibility.

It's kind of like having bad ideas enacted by the better funded lobbyists.

As far as I'm concerned, you're a major player. . . with or without cash or flash.

I'm a side bar who values your poignant, informational, topical posts and intriguing questions.

If you wish to contribute more in a "physical" realm, announcing as much won't enhance your status. . . IMO.

I am making sales from the existance of this forum. That I am thankful for. I would not mind contributing. But, I do not need permanent recognition for it.

I remember going through this with RC Groups when I began manufacturing RC helis and parts. I donated to them, but that was an awkward situation. I finally became a paid advertiser for RC Groups as a way of saying "Thank You!"

I like the idea of donating to a forum like this. Problem is, human nature is such that people will generally donate for some Bling like Methods said, rather than out of thankfulness for the help the forum has been to them and the E-bike cause in general.

In that regard, it is not donating at all, it is selling recognition.

I see your point.
The last thing I want to do is put control into the hands of people who have the "right money" as opposed to those who have the "right idea".

It truly pains me to have information deleted though... My time on this forum has been short, but I have spent many thousands of hours posting on other forums that are now extinct.
Hundreds of my projects, pictures, plans, - gone.
All my experiences, follies, and triumphs - gone.

Very sad as I had years of technical side-notes collected and indexed via Google on the site I am thinking of.
One day I logged in and the forum was just gone.

That's how we got here, too...

I don't think MB will pull the plug, as long as he is in business. (He might be amenable to a mirror or archive hosted by another member.)

IIRC, the auto-prune is only for general-discussion topics that have no activity for a significant period.

If valuable posts continue to expand as they do now, traffic-based advertising revenue may perpetually cover the cost of the board resources.

I'm with Matt on this one. I don't mind contributing but need no recognition for doing so. Contributions by members and staff are all that is needed to support another forum I frequent. The only recognition is an obscure page with a list of those contributing. A blank space would do for me. Owners who accept no advertising can accept the help for the good of the community they help to serve. I would like to see most of the forum archives electric vehicle/e- bike related accessible and preserved. Let me know PM me how things work out for a contribution when this is done.

If a little comp space will do it,I can go downtown to our local museum and fire up seymour's .He ain't using it any more and it's just sitting there, along side of a huge Mason shoe.

As a (currently penniless) freeloader, and founding member of this forum,

I say: let the place exist by voluntary, silent donation of them what has $$

When and IF I get some money of my own (no prospect of a job, but maybe, a legal-monetary settlement, maybe),

I WILL MAKE CONTRIBUTION OF $$ to this site, no fanfare or logo wanted.

That's my two cents and it's worth not a g-d penny, yet.

ADDEDENDUM/CORRECTION of sept. 09 09:

Have corrected a couple of google-google dyslexic errors in my old post above.
I never proof read casual posts after posting; am dyslexic and impulsive.

DO not think that I am "shilling" for voluntary donations to ES BY other people! NO!
Am merely saying that if and when I get some bling, I am mailing a modest check to one Michael Brown,
founder, that he may buy a power drill or bike part or server space, or anything...because he GAVE us this site,
and has kept it ad-free...perhaps not forever to come...but ES has evolved to become MUCH bigger than he ever planned.
This most-famed of all ebike sites was/is an "accident" of mal-circumstance. Michael rescued us all from oblivion when the old V-is-, place, died!

He deserves some recognition, on the same order as does Justin, or Ping, or Link, or FECHTER, or Ypedal...and so on!
Now, that is just my opinion. Have not a dime to give. You all have your lives and priorities; but when and if I get some bling:
I know where a tiny bit of it is going to go. That is all. I did not mean for this posting to appear aggressive, nor for it to guilt-trip anyone.

r.

I will donate $10 au. That will be plenty.

Apache, SQL, PHP, with forum package via Cpanel doesnt cost that much guys. Even a few dollars would help.

Storage problems?

Why dont people use bloody free picture accounts like photobucket.

Some of those damed png weigh a ton. I understand the need for high res pictures however you could disable the uploading of pictures.

Im sure ES folks with all their techno babble could figure out opening a photobucket account.

Some free image hosting sites.
