The Team Schluckspecht of the University of Applied Siences Offenburg participates since 1998 in the Shell Eco-marathon (SEM). The most energy-efficient vehicle wins this challenge.

With no doubt: The wheel hub motor is the most innovative system of the Schluckspecht-Project. First used at the 2006 Shell Eco-marathon, the team was awarded with the 1st price for technical innovation. The Bosch Innovation award was for given to the Schluckspecht-Team because of the innovative wheel hub motor. Using this motor, the team drove on the 3rd place of the fuel cell cars, with a range of 2614km per litre.

Using this wheel hub motor in 2008, the team won the fuel cell category with a range of 3198 km per litre (2nd in the overall ranking).

Their 3rd generation car looks pretty cool:

Interesting tow point :-| I'm guessing it screws on and off some how...
Definitely a sleek looking design. One more question if i may? How the heck you get into it seems like there's an absence of doors which would suggest the body lifts up ala a funny car drag car?

That's a pretty manly looking hubmotor.

Where to buy? :)

>90% including the controller... better?

Ja, pretty good.

Still not fantastic power density compared to the stuff we see around here.

The award winning was 2006. Would be interesting to compare the motor to 2nd and 3rd place to understand the jury's decision.

Funny sidenote: Seems their scientists had been a bit over enthusiast...
Schluckspecht E" shall go for a distance of over 1200km without recharging the batteries. The attempt will take place in South Africa, during the 2010 South African Solar Challenge
Schluckpecht E is back from South Africa
The Schluckspecht E arrived at Offenburg just in time for the 626,6 km Schluckspecht celebration on November 5, 2010.

They cheat... They've also been building their own direct ethanol fuel cells:
