Eurobike 2012 & ISPO 2012

A HUGE number of bikes had BB drives. The major suppliers for these were; Bosch, TranzX, Yamaha, and one I hadn't seen before MPF

Bosch and TranzX had the lions share of the market.

The Bosch system was quality all the way. They are making a major push to be THE quality brand for bike manufacturers to align themselves with.
Not only is the drive systm nice, but the battery enclosure/mount was top notch, and their display unit was very nice. No stone left unturned. They really wanted to be a complete and quality supplier.

Thanks for the exploded photos Adrian. Owe you a beer on the next group ride ;)

There's a lot of plastic in there!

There are more photos in the album here: https://picasaweb.google.com/116933283654301190551/Eurobike2012?authkey=Gv1sRgCJ7xop2bpuO-OQ#

What about Pinion? Is E1.8 going to go ahead?

Saw and played with the non-electric version, which won a prize. Very slick. Looks a lot smaller in person than the images look. Has a twist gear changer and a huge range.

Thanks Adrian. Link not working at the moment, though (well, not for me..).
Sorry, that page was not found.

Sorry some weird permissions thing going on. You'll have to make do with the direct link photos for now until I work it out.

Okay, I'll be uploading them to a different album here: https://picasaweb.google.com/116801429357145823829/Eurobike2012?authkey=Gv1sRgCLPbhd6jhpaQtQE

The other google account for the previous album has had some restrictions placed on it. :(

AEG Drive that won an award, but I don't hold a lot of hope for. Pretty heavy for what it is.

The main selling point is that you don't need special mounting points or a custom frame. So they are trying to capture the eBike maker that does not want to build a custom frame for a midmount Bosch type drive, but doesn't like the hub motor for some reason. So you end up with a heavy non-geared thing hanging off your chainring, requiring a new wide BB shoving one of you pedals way off to the side.

A lot of there parts were rapid prototypes too. I would have expected a bit more from a big company like AEG.

A2B

Can you spot the difference between the A2B hub motors on the metro and hybrid bikes.

Random Emotion bike

I like the lines on this clean looking ebike. Battery in curved downtube, and motor with integrated controller makes for a very clean build.

Think Gruber assist (Vivax now) but fat and heavy.

Made for very clean installation. Single connector between battery and a 2 speed hub motor, no throttle cable, not external controllers.

The small diameter means the disc brake rotor actually has radial clearance, so they can use the space used reserved for axial clearance for stuff inside the motor.

Grace

Grace had a nice line-up of bikes, all offering a s-pedelec version.

Grace Easy - A Bionx city bike
Grace MX - a hardtail mid drive offroad bike
Grace One - and a high power hub "eMotorbike"

Smart eBike

One to the prettiest industrial designed ebikes. But still just a bionx kit under the pretty skirt.
They definitely are playing the style card in their marketing, targetting the the hip young things obviously. But the price point is pretty much the same as other more generic normal bike looking kits of similar specs. So I guess they are trying to swing the ebike market away from the I am too old to pedal image.

Protanium

These guys had some great bikes, and won a bunch of awards. I liked their s-pedelecs. Both the standard hub motor, and new shaft motor varients.
Very clean looking bikes, with traditional geometry and well integrated electrics. Good for the 45kph s-pedelec class.

Different Midmount/BB drive

I saw a couple of bikes with these cast reduction BB drives. Not sure of the drive manufacturer.

Stromer

Some more very nice clean ebikes. Battery pack made by Samsung SDI, slides in to the battery hatch via some "rails" on the inside of the door. Very neat.

Pedelecs

Thought I would mention some of the different technlogies people are using for the pedelec sensors. Here is a list of the ones I came across. I am sure there are others I have missed.
- Internal BB torque/cadence sensor. Heaps of different offerings here. Requires a new special BB, and holes drilled for wiring
- External magnetic cadence sensors. Quite a few different varient all with magnet rings that clamp on the BB axle, or attach to the inside of the smallest chainring and a sensor mount on the BB.
- Internal to Motor. Bionx style. Strain guages etc on the axle.
- Replacement dropout. With strain guages built in.
- Chain tension measurement. A idler that mounts to the frame, and runs on the chain measuring chain tension.

The guy on the stand at the Bristol show told me that this bike has the Bafang BPM2 motor. Does that come with integrated controller or is the controller integrated elsewhere?

You could be right. I think my head was thinking Ematic when I was reading Emotion as a wrote that.
