EV Battery Degradation – What’s Your Experience Over Time?

I wanted to open up a discussion around battery degradation in electric vehicles. I’ve been using my EV for over two years now, and I’ve noticed a small but steady drop in range, around 8–10% so far.

While I know some loss is normal, I’m curious how others are experiencing this. Are certain EV brands or models holding up better over time? What charging habits (like fast vs. slow charging) seem to make a difference?

Also, has anyone here had a battery replacement done, or checked with dealerships about warranty coverage for degradation?

"Two years" is a meaningless figure. Lithium-ion batteries, when kept at a reasonable charge level, show minimal level of deterioration from sitting idly. What wears them are:

* sitting at high voltages
* cycles
* high temperatures (caused partially by fast charging)

Depending on how much of those factors the batteries experience, they will age differently. EV "brands or models" are virtually irrelevant - what matters is the internal battery capacity, chemistry and the use habits. So just gathering experiences from someone in Norway driving their LiFePo4-loaded BYD on short trips and charging slowly at home will tell you nothing about how (for example) your NMC Porsche Taycan will fare when charged at 200+kW in 40C weather.

The important point isn't whether the batteries will degrade (yes, they will), but whether the entire vehicle cost of ownership makes sense to you, in your specific conditions under the use you envision.

Purchased a used 2013 Leaf in late 2017. It would do 67 miles. Now 2025 the car will do 47 miles. The car still does not have 50k miles on it. Used it for store runs mostly. Now drive it 1 or 2 miles every 6 weeks. Traction battery was $3k, talked to Nissan they want $21K to replace it. My trike battery is 7yrs old now to so it maybe my use of them. Will replace my trikes batteries and rip apart and look for any bad cells and maybe build a battery out of the best.
