Aren't those designed to melt closed in case of fire, which helps to protect the contents? Not sure if it would work in reverse. :?

Exactly, they don't seal in fire, they seal it out.

You might need to still put some vent holes, to attempt to let out hot gasses, but direct them in the desired direction vs having the fire shoot at the drapes, carpet or furniture.

It's never been tested, but my storage is ammo boxes on the hearth of the fireplace. The vent holes I put in the ammo boxes point into the firebox.

Anything remotely sketchy is stored in an old fridge in the backyard.
