First build

My hv160 is on route from Castle now Rodger i am guessing yours aren't far away now :)

That Kona has same forks as i just bought for my new bike Marzocchi drop offs FTW!

Loving the look of this build. After a overseas trip this year i am going to bite the bullet and start a build my self based on 2 astro motors from the genius Recumpence. Cant wait to see how your bike works out and specially how you compare it to motorbikes you have ridden. I would love to build a set of motors into a road legal dirt bike or open frame bike style.

awesome! im doing a build with a giant stp bike, a dj style bike but has tubes shaped like the kona dually you got, so i shall be interested to see how you mount your stuff on the bikes!

Hey people of internet land  .

I received a little package from the MATTSTORE yesterday. Getting very close to starting up my builds....

I was intrigued by the thread a few days ago of a forum member boostjuices reply to frame clamps. Using cheap T-Bolt style hose clamps.....I decided to give it a go and see how well they hold on......

Alls I can say is they are solid and my whimpy arms cant make it rotate on the frame. I dont know if they will hold up to twin 3220s but I do think they would do very well for a lower powered build. Obviously you would just get Matt to make you the correct size frame clamps if you were already ordering a drive, but as my frame is not a uniform round shape, these clamps form a good contact area all the way around. I will add some rubber (tube) for extra grip between them and the frame before finishing this off, hope they hold up. 2ndly I may have to modify matts drive a little bit  . I cannot get enough rotation on the motor plate to get them out of the way of the front wheel at full travel. Other than that, everything I need is ordered just waiting for it all to come in, oh and finding time to put it all together.

Again thankyou Matt, excellent gear. And thanks to AJ for giving me motivation to get up and do something on my days off.

Till next time i have something new to report.....

Cheers

Having invested so much money and time into all that fine equipment , why not spring $100 and have a pro weld some solid mounting blocks onto that downtube. ?
If that drive twists a little and jams the chain....could do a lot of damage with those Astro's at WOT !

Maybe because its an aluminum frame, already been heat treated & additional welding would weaken it or maybe he just wants to keep the frame stock
so it can be sold in the future.

Go whip some lead out of the neighbors cars now rodgah so you can at least test the bike while waiting for lipo delivery :p

Looks good!

Per your PM, the throttle plug can plug either way into the controller. However, only one way will arm and run the controller. If plugged in the wrong way, nothing bad will happen. Been there, done that. :)

The wire colors are different, but a little similar. You can estimate how it plugs in by the rough color comparison.

I do not think those clamps will hold with all that power. But, you never know. Those clamps are wide (lots of surface area) and can go pretty tight. I do not think they will spin on the frame. I am more concerned they will flex.

both exactly the reason.....till Im confident this frame will suit me.

thanks Matt on the wiring. If you mean by flex, stretching the clamp down away from the frame at the rear then yes im following you Matt, also breaking the little spot welds that hold them together too. After sleeping on it I think im going to either lengthen the mounting bracket up to spread their grip further appart with more clamps, but for the time being I can fit 2 more clamps inside of the ones already on there as a bit of insurance incase the rear one snaps.

On my way to work(got to love iphones), back next week.

That was what my money was on happening ;) There stainless steel clamps aren't they? Hopefully adding
more will be the answer, as they say, only one way to find out ;) Have you "relieved" a few of your neighbors
cars of their batteries yet? roll of duct tape 4 12v lead acid batteries duct taped to the frame, will help
keep that front wheel on the ground too its a win win GO GO GO start "relieving" ... :p

Beg, steal or borrow 'em, just get this going so we can see a vid of it in action!

Lookin good Rodgah!

twinsanity

lol, i think you'll have enough torque there roj and no mistake.
Nice bike too :)

Hey Rodgah - You've dropped so much cash and planning into this project that it would be a shame to see it all turn to custard over a second rate motor mount system. I've had some dealings with the guys at Gripsport (www.gripsport.com.au) and found them to be excellent. There down in Melbourne, and a custom job like this is right up their alley. Prices are very reasonable as well.
Cast an eye over their website, send them some photo's and a description of what your trying to achieve. They may be able to help you out. I can also assist with any face to face dealings that need to be made with them. Can't wait to see this beast in action.

hehe thanks man :p . I realise its hard to tell from just photos but i can tell you for sure, you will snap the M6 tightening bolt before you will get these type of clamps to break, have experienced this many times before.....

That being said....nothing looks as good as machined alluminium but its just extra time and drama that isnt really worth the bother.

Honestly, its that strong id say the frame would break before the clamps would.

And a mock up of where the batteries (foam)will sit. The cardboard will be 3mm alluminium and probably boxed out to the width of the batteries on each side.
cardboard.jpg

Just waiting on batteries to come now(ordered from the aus warehouse of HK) before i start cutting up the 3mm sheet.....got to make sure i have everything mapped out first.

on a side note....heres a dirty old coal truck....which is what i do for a job

coal.jpg

hopefully the batteries will be here by next week before I get back from work, then the cutting will start

hehe yeah i thought you would agree Matt.

actually while ive got you, if I go ahead with this alloy box idea, I am a little stuck with what to do with the connection from controller to motor, for instance I am thinking about getting a piece of HDPE (or similar insulator) putting 3 copper bolts through it(for the 3 wires motor ->esc). that way i can unbolt drive off frame easy or alloy box off frame easy, independant of eachother, just by undoing the 6 bolts connecting the wires to the motors.......following??

the reason I ask is that I am wondering if they would cause a significant amount of resistance(my initial idea was to use huge andersons but i thought this would be a smarter way). Motor to esc wire length is going to be less than what they were supplied with.

and finally battery wiring........the esc wires are going straight to connectors, but the wire i use to put the packs in series -> is 8gauge enough?, I have plenty of 4 but i would have to upgrade to 120amp andersons to fit it.

Cheers

The bolts as distribution/disconnect points are fine. No problem there.

8 guage wire should be fine. However, monitor your current ripple. If it is high (over 4 volts), add more caps and heavier wire (or more runs of 8 guage in parallel).

Matt

thanks matt, will do.....I am happy I am ironing all these little things out early so I dont have to re-make something.

cant you tell I love my job bahahahaha

As I said, I ordered lipo from HK aussy warehouse.....took 4 days (incl weekend) for it to arrive........16 packs....all perfect, thank you HK

Started work on the battery box on my bike (kona).....
box3.jpg
box1.jpg
box2.jpg

ready to be tig'd up....it will have covers on each side and the top that bolt on to get access to all the wirey thingamy jabbys. Tomorrow I will have to cut out the parts to make a similar box for the norco of my mates.

You might see the new chain in the pics.....im still waiting on my lasercut adaptor to add the big sprocket onto the freehub....

Its all coming together slowly....I dont really like this building 2 bikes at once though.

Cheers

Beautiful job :D It will have great weight distribution and great protection for the battery pack for those inevitable impacts

Been distracted with my son's activities and house stuff. He is an eighth grader and I have to get him on the right academic track. Seems to take a lot more of my time than I thought it would at this age. I only have a couple of years to manage this.

Controllers remain my challenge. I am expecting to use a sensored controller and have done some bench testing but this is some much more complex than doing a hub motor build. I am a full time bicycle commuter with 20 mile round trip and need a rock solid reliable system for daily use.

We seem to be close for about a year now but Gwhy is one of the few sensored controller systems with proven reliability.

Holy, cow, Man!

That thing is going to be absolutely crazy!

Matt

thanks yes i think it has great weight distribution....an yes I think it will be crazy, now you know what it feels like to watch something crazy being built  .

Im not overly impressed with the box shape, I think it makes it look like one of the stealth bomber copys...the dodgy ones...but there is not much I can really do without either duct tape, or cutting the frame and making it accomodate the bits and pieces like timma's norco. Nearly finished the 2nd box, just procrastinating now.

Oh an matt, any idea where that 2nd sprocket got to?

till later.....
Cheers
