I'm looking to add a rear hub motor to my Kona Unit single speed 29" MTB. I live in Victoria BC so I'm thinking geared would be best (because of the hills and constant elevation changes). Even though it's single speed, I was thinking I'd like both throttle and pedal assist (since I will be pulling a small trailer at times)... Would like a top speed of at least 45kph (throttle only if possible), so probably a 48-52v 11ah battery and 25a+ controller? I'd rather pay a little more for quality (eZee?) than some risky cheap stuff. Also, the Kona Unit is cromoly with sliding dropouts, so not sure that I'd need a torque arm?

Anyhow, looking for advise and options!

Have you checked out the ezee kits at Grin Tech http://ebikes.ca ?

There is also the option there to use the CAv3 and a torque-sensing BB (THUN, TDCM) to do PAS power control by how hard you pedal rather than by just cadence (how fast you pedal).

Since you're in Vancouver, you're in all kinds of luck. Head over to Grin Tech at 950 Powell St #205, Vancouver, BC V6A 1H9, Canada, or give them a call @ 604-569-0902. They have a website, too: http://www.ebikes.ca/.
heck, I've even heard they sponsor a forum full of some wild and knowledgeable dudes.

The owner, Justin, it probably the godfather of Ebikes in North America, and contacting them is probably well worth your time.

If the sliders are ~1/4" thick steel, then you probably don't need torque arms. If they are thinner, a torque arm is a good idea. However, I would contact someone who does laser cutting, and get at least one of the sliders copied in up to 10mm thick 4130 cromoly steel.

Thanks for the replies - I did contact Grin over a week ago but haven't heard back as yet, so was hoping for more suggestions on here. Unfortunately I'm in Victoria, not Vancouver, so I can't just pop in to Grin's offices :)

Hello canuck88 ,ezee hubs are great for Victoria.. a whole kit from grin is a smart first timer kit. if ya need any help just ask..

Mark.

Well, whatever it takes, pop in to Grin and see some stuff for yourself. Hell, I'd pop in if it was less than 500 miles for me.
