Founded by Tohid Naeem, FreshFoodBike.com delivers goods via electric-powered bicycles charged by Whole Foods' solar panel array. E3 Metro eBikes transport deliveries, a process that is made possible by sponsorship from electric bike retailer IZip Store in Venice and Burley's Travoy Urban Trailer. Naeem is FreshFoodBike.com's sole Sustainable Delivery Concierge, but one of the company's "founding goals is to create a fleet of sustainable jobs in Los Angeles," he told us in an email.

Sustainable Delivery Fee Structure:

Concierge Shopping Fee = 15% of Grocery Subtotal
+ Delivery Fee (See Delivery Fee Schedule Below)
+ Gratuity = 15% of Groery Subtotal

Delivery Fee Schedule:

The Delivery Fee is determined by the destination address' distance from Whole Foods Market, 3rd & Fairfax: 6350 W. 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90036 (Click for Google Maps Tool).

1.5 miles or less = $ 4.99

1.5 to 2.5 miles = $ 9.99

2.5 to 5.0 miles = $20.00

USC & UCLA = $20.00

$100 Minimum on Orders over 2.5 Miles

All Major Credit Cards & PayPal Accepted

15% on top of whole food's wallet cleaning prices... yes, they figured out how to make food more expensive ;)

Yeah,
it's designed for high cash flow yuppie bankster types that want to look

Oh well, it's a start anyway.

My bad.
WOW.

I would be making more money doing that per hour ( $60/hr. ) than when i did computer repair house calls if i had that job, and was pocketing all the profits.

Especially on 20S lipo with dual hubs..

That's an incredible markup. I think it would only work in the beverly hills / malibu / glendale areas where you have stars who can't be bothered to leave the house and shop for themselves. Those are the only customers i can think of.

Hello,

This is my first forum post/response, so just make with the nice., ok?

First off, how cool is it to see my name on a forum that has nothing to do about that time last summer where I was never nowhere near wherever they said I was supposed to be and something so hoity, yet cool, as an Electric Vehicle Technology Forum? Thank you for being interested and moving the conversation forward.

Very cool service, don't mind us we are all nerdy cheapskates that spend all our extra money on ebikes.

Yeah,
it's designed for high cash flow yuppie bankster types that want to look

Dude, there aren't any trendy yuppies at Whole Foods Stores!!

^--- NAILED IT.

Naeem / Tohid ( i added you to the endless sphere facebook so i don't know what your first name is since it's in 2 different orders. ), don't mind us. Cheapskates is a very accurate description :)

( btw, i find it kind of funny that whenever we start talkin' some jive about a company on ES, a CEO, or sales/PR rep will often pop in within 1-2 days of us posting. It's like people take us seriously or something  )

Reminds me of seeing the price of gas one time, at a full service gas station near Mission Bay. I did a total double take, gas selling at 3x the price a few blocks away. Then I noticed the trophy wife and jaguar getting gas filled, tires and oil checked, windows cleaned by three guys. Ohhhhhh. I get it now. Gas + a buck a gallon for each guy.

Well worth a big fat mark up to have the grub delivered if your time is much more limited than your $$$ , and the green delivery may actually be cheaper to the customer than a big gas truck doing it.

Calculate yourself, if your time is worth say, 10 bucks an hour, your car costs $.75 a mile, the store is 8 miles roundtrip, and you spend $20. $5 for time, $6 for the car, $31 cost. Not much different from delivered really.

You go freshfoodbike!

One little nitpick. The web goes worldwide, so have somebody make it more obvious on the very top of the very first page of your site where you are. It gives a street address, but not the city. I had to dig to page two to figure out it was LA.

It may be that they haven't broken into the yuppy upper circles yet. It takes a bit of time and money, hence the high prices. Ya gotta start somewhere. :D:
There are yuppies in every closet, some just haven't come out yet. The recipe names are an indicator. The first recipe reminds me of the the last days of the Roman empire where fancy dishes were the norm. If they come up with Pickled Ostrich Feet or Lark's Tongue in Aspic, that will prove the point.

Here many things have express delivery, fast foods like McDonald's KFC etc, pharmacies, and some markets. At the high end the charge is the equivalent of about $1, but typically it's about 50 cents or free. Trying to make a 6 figure income doing grocery shopping and delivery for those too rich and lazy to do it themselves is a bit over the top to me.

edit- Dogman, all gas stations here are full service.

Yeah, same in Mexico. I went to grab the hose and fill up in Chihuahua City and suddenly three guys were all over me. Used to just swiping the card on the pump and pumping our own here in the states. Full service gas mostly dissapeared in the US back in the Carter years. I think there is still someplace that it's full service by law though.

Over the top? IN LA?

Welcome!! :D

I love your idea, and good on you for making the first step in your new business!

Don't let anyone discourage you, this is a WONDERFUL Idea, and I have thought of something similar myself from time to time in my area, there is actually a local Green Grocer in my little town of Oregon City, and the owner has a Bakfiets http://bakfietscargo.blogspot.com/ cargo bike that she would use for deliveries if she could deal with the hills here.

I'm wanting to help her with an electric conversion to make that possible with out her going home every night beat from the deliveries (she has since stopped doing that service with her cargo bike because of it).

For those of you who think this is an over-priced service, I ask you to consider the fact that most people do not visit the grocery store every day, and in a city like LA there are MANY professionals who would literally be loosing money to stop while walking down the road to pick up a $100 bill for the time it would take away from making money in their job.

It's not like he's going to be slammed every day doing constant deliveries, there will be days and possibly weeks when business is slow. One of the worst things one could do is under-charge for a service and not be able to afford repairs to the bike, new batteries, etc.

I guarantee there are many services like this that us average joe's don't use and probably never will, and no I wouldn't be using a service like this myself either, but that doesn't mean there aren't tons of people with money to spend that will. 8)

Thank you for the warm welcome, everyone! Warm Fuzzies thanks to @dogman & @LI-ghtcycle!

Again, humbled that http://www.FreshFoodBike.com is a topic on this awesomely awesome and important forum. The impetus for starting http://www.FreshFoodBike.com was to create a sustainable business model and much-needed jobs. One would think that all readers of this forum would appreciate and support a new breed of business that is 99.9% sustainable and showcases the viability of solar-charged electric bikes as an alternative to gasoline-powered modes of transporting goods. Have you seen the Whole Foods Parking Lot video on the YouTubes?

It is a great window into LA's car-obsessed culture . People have no compunction about wasting gas and damaging the environment even further by circling a parking lot for up to an hour. Calculate that, neptronix and ElectricEd. FreshFoodBike.com's Concierge Grocery Shopping and Sustainable Delivery Service pricing includes a Sustainable Delivery Concierge's time, cost of insurance, equipment, etc. Anyone is welcome to replicate FreshFoodBike.com’s business model in a more affordable fashion.

FreshFoodBike.com customers, who include home-bound new parents, long-term stay hospital patients and out-of-state parents of USC and UCLA students that want their kids to eat healthy while at school, make every day and each delivery special. There are too few organic or sustainable options and even fewer delivery services providing quality, sustainably/locally raised produce, meat & seafood, non-GMO or organic grocery items or special dietary food options. Whole Foods 3rd & Fairfax's vast selection of the aforementioned ensures everyone, from Kosher to Halal and Gluten-Free to Paleo can have choices. Whole Foods Market's slogan "So Local You Can Taste it!" is apt and FreshFoodBike.com is proud to be a local, Whole Foods Market vendor. Whole Foods Market 3rd & Fairfax's high quality standards, values and management make it the ideal partner and home base for FreshFoodBike.com https://wholefoodsmarket.com/products/locally-grown/index.php?state=CA https://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/fairfax/

Here is some recent press articles and reviews that should shed some more light on http://www.FreshFoodBike.com and its services.

Renée Romah: “I could not be more pleased with this service. I wanted to send an LA friend some fresh fruit, soup and vitamins to help him stay healthy - Tohid went above and beyond to help me! I gave him some specific items and also asked him to add some things that he thought would be good for somebody who was 'under the weather'. My friend was so impressed! Also, Tohid took the time to explain the list of items to him and how the vitamins were to be taken! All of this and environmentally friendly? I would recommend to everybody and will use this company time and again!”

Mi So: “Incredible Service! Fast, Reliable, Honest and Personable.”

Rae: "I would use again and again! Tohid went above and beyond. Very friendly, competent. I cannot explain the value of finding, not only a convenient, efficient and painless concierge service, but a person that seems to actually enjoy their work. Tohid shops for his clients as if he were shopping for his friends. Very thoughtful and thorough."

Thank you's and licks go out to our super-awesome sponsors:

Area codes on phone numbers mean very little--more than half of my friends with phones have area codes from all over the USA, but have lived in Phoenix for years...because they use cellphones that they originally got in other states. Some of them run businesses off those phones; this means that at least to some people it doesn't matter if they have to dial long-distance to reach them by phone (because so many people use cellphones these days that long-distance charges don't apply anyway, from cell to cell, and it uses the same number of minutes to call local as it does out of state).

That can make it hard to establish locality based on phone number, so actually having city/state/etc. on any address that's on a website can be essential to figuring out where it actually is. ;)

One might say the same about any website offering a local-area-only service that doesn't actually say outright what that area is. ;)

(just trying to help you make the best site you can--it does have the full address here:
http://freshfoodbike.drupalgardens.com/faq
a ways down the page, but that's only if you're digging for the info. I normally expect to see that info on the main page of a local business, as well as on the Contact page (but it doesn't appear to be on either one).

Still, it's a good idea for a business, and one I might consider emulating here in Phoenix, though it'd have to be at a much lower cost for my area.

Thank you for the kind words. How can FreshFoodBike.com and its sponsors, Whole Foods Market 3rd & Fairfax, IZip Store, JumpStart Bars, O'Brothers & Rush Bowls help the awesome green grocer lady's conversion in Oregon City? PM or Email me.

Just becoming more and more a peeve of mine. We spend a lot of time answering questions from new members here, and invariably the reply begins like this.

If you want us to recomend an ebike stuff vendor, it helps us to know what continent you are on.

No problem for your buisness. It's undoubtably the only whole foods market on earth, on the only street named Fairfax or 3rd on earth, and of course everybody worldwide knows all the LA area codes.

I suppose it doesn't matter much, a guy in Seattle looking at your site is no customer anyway. But don't underestimate your actual customer bases capacity for overlooking your service because they mistakenly think you are in Seattle, or whatever.

People surely know exactly what the mileage from their house to the market is too, so they'd never need any kind of map of the area, showing where different delivery charges apply. Do you go by bike odometer, or as the crow flies distance?

I'm not trying to flame you buddy, just point out to you that obvious to you is NEVER obvious to most people. You HAVE to make it as easy as possible for the customer. " Oh, Whole Foods in LA. I live in LA. I'll keep reading." That's the response you want. Not " I wonder where that store is? It doesn't say. Screw it, I'll look at some other website now." They may have NO IDEA what street the store close to them is actually on. They just know how to get there.
