I'm a new member but have been lurking on this site for a year now. I'd like to build a friction drive for my sons bike mechanically similar to the one on this thread https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=71252 but I'm having trouble picking a motor and controller for what I want to do. My son is 5 and his training wheels have been off since he turned 4. He rides a 16 in coaster brake bike now. I have a 20 in Kona Shredder with 7 speeds and disk brakes for him but looks like it will be year before he can touch the ground on it. I take him on some easy mountain bike trials often but when we get to a hill (they are only small hills but that single speed bike does him no favors) I have to ride up behind him, jump off my bike, grab it by the neck with my right hand and run while I push him with my left hand. We've pretty much got it down now where he never stops moving or pedaling. Anyway, I would like to build a friction drive to do the pushing instead of me. Dispite the fact that he can handle a throttle (he's been riding a 12.5 OSET since he was 2.5) I think i'd like a button on his handle bars that turns on the drive and has a top speed of about 3-5 mph. His OSET is 500w and that thing rips! So I think 100-200w would be all that he needs to get him up these mild hills. Does anyone have any ideas on what motor to use and the simplest control system. Simple and cheap are my goals! Thanks!

I forgot to mention I am in the process of installing a Bafang 750W BBS02 on my 2007 Transition Preston FR. I will be posting a build thread once more of my parts come in.

Thanks! A lot of good info there. But the problem is still the low speed (5 mph) I want to run. Even if I use a small 1 in diameter drive roller I would need to spin it at below 2000 rpm. I was looking at this motor http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__19039__turnigy_g110_brushless_outrunner_210kv_1_10_glow_.html but I would have to run it at 2S? Might need a chain or belt gear reduction between the roller and motor.
