Go-Hub Battery Upgrades?

Hello everyone,

I've been using a Go-Hub conversion kit (Crystalyte 408 & 36v SLA) for almost two years now and I love it. What I don't love is the heavy SLA batteries that make it top heavy and have a limited range. I've been browsing this forum for a while now and I've been considering a battery upgrade. It looks like the LiFePO4 batteries are the best but they're too expensive for me right now. I saw this NiMH battery pack and was wondering if this would be an easy direct replacement for my SLAs.

Thanks for any advice,
Peter

Should be. Just swap out the old pack and put in the new (assuming plugs match, of course).

Unless you're lugging around 40lbs of 18Ah SLAs (like me. ugh.), you should get more range out of the thing. You should also see more cycles out of it.

The battery system is a 10Ah 14lb NiMh pack made up of cylindrical D cells. The battery is capable of recharing in approximately 3 hours with the included 36V 2A charger.

What's this? 10Ah of discharge from 6Ah of charge? We seem to have an over-unity device on our hands here.

What sort of amperage does that thing draw? If it's not too high (and you don't mind a bit of work), you might want to look into PingPing's (of eBay) lithium packs.

Thats exactly the "kind" of battery you need. But I would be suspicious of that battery, since they got the math wrong on the charging times, it might be because it's realy a 6ah battery. Doubtfull, but proceede with caution. I think there are a few other companies making that style battery too.

Something to consider, since you're looking at new batteries anyway, is converting to 48V. your 408 motor would realy wake up with the added voltage, letting you ride at the speed of lycra wearing roadbike riders.

I'm not sure of the amperage draw. Most of you here on this forum are waaay more knowledgeable than I am about all of this technology. One of the reasons I liked this battery is because it was as close to a plug-and-play solution as possible. If you have time, could you send me a link to one of PingPing's lithium packs?

Thanks!

I've thought about going to 48V. I've heard that my controller will support going to 48V without modification. Some have suggested going with panniers and SLA batteries but I don't like the extra weight. I wonder how much extra speed and range I would get out of 48?
