Not sure if I am being a noob about battery technology but apparently G1 is using Ni Mh battery but not Li ion

For my knowledge this type of battery should be completely discharged before recharging it to avoid the memory effect

However, from the G1 user manual page 40-41 says you should charge the battery as soon as after the ride to protect the battery.

Does anyone know what is the best thing for me to do?

Thanks

The memory effect only occurs in very controlled conditions. If you're not doing the exact same ride every time you take the bike out, I wouldn't worry about it.

Do not discharge a nickel pack too deeply; that invites cell reversal and permanent damage. You can discharge a single cell to 0V, but I don't think a 1.2V E-bike would be very satisfying.

Nickel batteries have high self discharge rates, so you should either keep them on a trickle charger or top up before you ride.

Manual correct, just charge when you get home. Charge periodically, if you don't ride for weeks.

Memory effect is a myth. Don't discharge fully unless you just happen to ride that far.

Top off before you ride though, will help prevent inbalance, which people have mistaken for memory effect. Top off helps rebalance the pack.

Balance is getting all the cells fully charged, instead of some of them full, some of them less than quite full.

Good to see some sensible advice on the "memory effect". I long ago gave up trying to argue with people who tell me that not full discharging their li-ion phone battery will kill it.

Memory effect is actually not a myth... NASA encountered it in 1st satelites which were using NiCd batteries and solar panels. They were charged and discharged periodically only by few %... Yeah and the capacity started to decrease. But this process could be reversed easily by deep discharge and charge to maximum capacity.

NiMh have neglible memory effect compared to NiCd cells. I have been using them for long time and never encountered it.

A yeah... and Lipol batteries are getting damaged themselves just by existing...
