Google Bike Maps Closer to Reality

anyone tried this yet?

found on google this morning:

Google on Wednesday launched bicycle directions for Google Maps making it easier for cyclists to plan routes in 150 U.S. cities including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Portland and Washington, DC. You can use Google Maps to find cycling-specific directions in urban areas, and by default Google Maps will plan your route to avoid steep hills whenever possible. The new maps feature can also be used as a map layer to get an overall sense of cycling accessibility in a particular city.

Yeah, I tried for a few routes around my city, basically mirrored what I normally ride. Was kind of surprised by it.

It seems like they have the majority of routes for Phoenix, but I know that some of the ones they show as continuous aren't (some are blocked by fences/walls) and some they show as stopping don't, but rather continue all the way to the next segment they do show. I'm fairly sure there are lots of other routes they don't even show.

I wish it had a way to add user-data, and that it had helpful info like color-coded inclines. There are a few bike paths around here that are useful to someone on a lightweight bike with a good rider (or motor) but are impossible on a heavy bike or cargo bike or an out-of-shape or injured rider on a regular bike--you can't go slow enough to get the torque needed to climb them all the way up and still stay upright. (on a trike it wouldn't matter as long as it has low gears).

But at least finally they are starting it!
