so gordon brown came out in favour of electric cars. this is a really good opportunity for us to ask for stuff we want, while it is still fresh in the media mind.

what would you suggest?

...more support for EV network?
do any of you ever write to super market chains to suggest EV charge points?

if you don't ask you don't get. all it takes is enough letters and something will happen.

I think one request would be to add some umph to the hobbled e-bike regulation you are living with. Increase the allowable no-pedal speed to 20 or 25mph, and allow power to the 500-1000W range as street-legal "bicycles" (no tags, no license, no insurance required).

Set the max speed to 30mph and no power limit.

Okay, so the 30mph thing may have to be brought down a bit (to 29mph :p), but I can't see any problem with a 5kW ebike if it can't go any faster than the legal speed limit.

For cars, we need a slightly higher speed limit for nev's. 25 mph is too limiting, and full safety is too costly. They do need to be just a bit better than a golf cart, but as long as it has some crumple zone and a seat belt adults should be able to drive it at 35 mph without having to have air bags and stuff. Why should they have to be slower than a moped?

i don't care about rules, they are made to be broken :D it's infrastructure i care about ! we should all write to the places we would like to be able to charge at and ask them to subscribe to EV network. http://www.ev-network.org.uk

I know this probably doesn't fit in the ebike discussion thread, but it seems that now is the time to demand that GM resurrect the EV1 plug in electric car. They are obligated by law to do whatever it takes to turn a profit for me, a shareholder. They're down to just under 10 bucks per share from a 43 dollar high a year ago. All they have to do is fire up the assembly line, put Americans to work and start making money again. They could also tie A123 up building those fabulous batteries day and night and people would be once again so happy to buy an American car.

But will they do it?

Should Tesla be the only option for those who can't build their on conversion? Who'll be able to afford a Tesla when this country's in a freekin' depression because the oil companies raped our future, the banking industry raped anyone who would sign on the dotted line and GM refused to do the smartest thing possible: recommissioning mothballed technology ripe for such a time as this? (sorry....I tend to rant!)

Does anyone have the time and technology to build an online petition that we could circulate and force their fat heads our way for a little reasonable discourse?

Curious what you all have to say on this.

I think we should shoot for a higher top speed and unlimited power, say 25-30mph. the law as it stands is 15mph, but why are we also limited to 200w!! I mean a speed limit fair enough, but why a wattage limit? makes no sense to me, We should get one of those online government petitions going http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/
