Grin Baserunner / Suite not picking up motor speed?

Dear all,

I'm programming up a replacement grin Baserunner system on a bike. The motor spins on Autotune in the Phaserunner suite nicely, and in the dashboard, it picks up the hub RPM spinning backwards, but not forwards. When riding, the speed on the display is erratic so the bike doesn't properly apply power.

Baserunner V6
Superharness
SW102 Display
Unknown hub... The bike is a Burisch Synergy GT

Has anyone had a similar issue / any suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

A controller relies on a speed sensor for geared hub motors to provide a speed since the motor is sometimes spinning, other times not.

I don't know fine details about the superharness but older cycle analyst equipment had the option to use a magnetic speed pickup. Wonder if the superharness can use that.

Per the manual, if a speed sensor signal is present, the controller will automatically select it.

I would test the motor to make sure it’s putting out a speed signal. You’ll need a multimeter, a 5v source and a 10k resistor.

With a geared hubmotor, you'll need to connect it's built in wheelspeed sensor (often but not always a white wire) to the speed sensor input of the PR.

Otherwise the only speed sensor available is a motor hall, which only works when the motor spins, and if you are pedalling the motor won't spin because the shell can't backdrive it due ot the internal clutch of the geared hubmotor.

The motor speed sensor (hall) will be picked up any time the motor is running (powered or backdriven by the shell), but not if it isn't.

If your motor has no sp3eed sensor built in, you'll need to add one mounted to the frame or fork and a magnet on a spoke. You can buy these lots of places; any two wire version just hooks between speed sensor input and ground on the PR.

Note that unless they've changed the firmware, the PR has "odd" conditions on when it does and does not pick up the wheelspeed sensor and use that data insteaed of hte motor halls. IIRC, if the wheelspeed sensor doesn't pulse often enough it will instead latch onto the motro hall instead, which then screws up behavior if you have any form of speed limits in play, and depending on how you have it set up and your specific riding conditions, can be outright dangerous.

For instance, if you have a single wheel sensor magnet, and a 20mph speed limit, and you're riding in traffic where that 20mph is your only reason you're not being run over, then for whatever reason the speed signal pulse gets missed enough times (loose sensor on a frame, magnet moving on a spoke, etc) and it switches to the motor halls, it will get many times more speed pulses than it should for the speed you're going. Thus, it will cut off motor power (or worse, actively brake if you have a setup that can do this and you've set it to do so), and your speed will drop rapidly (dpeending on your riding conditions and aerodynamics and weight), which might be very bad if the traffic behind you isn't paying attention. :(

So I highly recommned *not* using any speed limiting within the PR itself unless you can guarantee that the wheelspeed sensor will always be read correctly and often enough.

If they've fixed the firmware then this is not an issue for newer versions....

So potentially wire in an external speed sensor into the white(?) and black motor wires?

What settings/parameters in the Phaserunner suite would need to be adjusted?

Could the current setup be confused expecting a temp/speed signal incorrectly? If so, which parameters to check/modify?

Can you provide a picture of the motor’s connector(s). The motor should have 3 large conductors
(Three larger pins on the connector) and 5 thinner conductors (5smaller pins) at minimum. If there is an internal speed sensor, there will be a 6th thinner conductor (usually white) with an additional thin pin on the connector (so 6 thinner pins total). If there is a motor has a sixth thin conductor, then you should test that it’s functioning, as I mentioned in my earlier post.
Detailed instructions on how to test can be provided once you determine the existence of an internal speed sensor, and confirm that you have a meter to test for voltage. If there is an sensor is working, then running the auto tune might get the controller to recognize its presence.

The motor doesn't need a speed sensor input, the controller does. So you must connect whatever speed sensor is used to the speed sensor input of the *controller*, not the motor.

There are no settings for speed sensors.

The only settings are for any speed limiting you want to occur, so you set those as desired.
