Halogen transformers as lipo charger power source

Hi,

I have a few transformers in the house from a recent renovation. They are 50W 12v, i.e. a bit over 4 amps. They were for low voltage halogens, and therefore they should be prepared to be used for long periods of time. They are AC, not DC. Is there a reason why I should not use two of those in parallel to power my lipo charger?

Thanks!

Daniel

10A diodes are pretty cheap, maybe a capacitor and make a full wave rectifier?

Probably a bit too much effort to have wide appear, but if you already have the transformers and want to use them I'm sure you can make them work :)

They will probably be perfectly happy to run a charger, as long as you keep the draw under what they are rated for. You would need a full wave bridge rectifier for each, and a bit of capacitance on the DC output before it hits the charger.

However, 50W power supplies tend to be very inexpensive, and modern switching units will be smaller, lighter, and more efficient than a transformer based design.
