Has anyone ever switched out their thumb throttle?

Just to be clear, I already have a generic thumb throttle on the handlebar, made of black plastic and generally very meh. Pushing it down feels very mushy and when I let off it springs back like a door-stopper. Has anyone ever tried upgrading it to say an ATV thumb throttle? They make some really nice ones but are ebike throttles completely electronic? Or do they function mechanically the same (pulling a metal wire) which then sends some kind of signal?

Perhaps one could buy a ebike throttle and tear out the guts to transfer to the ATV throttle.

Did a bit more research and apparently ebike throttles use a Hall Effect sensor. So mechanically they are different, but I could see the guts being transferred over being a viable option. The ATV throttles are basically hollow inside from what I’ve seen. Might be a nice DIY project for me to tackle! Let me know if anyone else has done this or something similar.

Different mechanism and operating principle entirely.

The usual suggested upgrade throttle is a Magura, also I believe domino (?).

Swapping the guts results in the same function with a different knob. The spring return would likely not work as well due to heavier weight. No real point to it.

You can use a cable throttle to actuate an electronic throttle, a few have done it, but generally only for fairly obscure reasons.

What EXACTLY do you want the throttle to do for you that it is not doing now?

No need to do that. Just buy a hall effect throttle box operated by a bowden cable so you can put any "normal" thumb or twist throttle on your handle bar:https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/32954909008.html?spm=a2g0s.8937460.0.0.21eb2e0eP4vcbd

That is how many Chinese electric scooters, mopeds and motorcycles do it including the Sur Ron Light Bee.

Edit: found an even cheaper one especially if you already have a bowden cable that came/comes with the throttle you choose:https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/4000768288652.html

Oh wow that’s amazing! So you’d get all the tactile feedback of an analog throttle and it would simply connect to the box which makes it digital? :thumb: Thanks for this!!

Replace it with a half twist throttle is my advice. Especially for longer rides, so you can jam the grip against the throttle for a third world cruise control when you ride a long flat road.

Not knocking the other solution, if you love a thumb throttle. I just don't love em.
