so whats your story gonna be when you get pulled over doing the speed limit?

I pull out a sheet of paper I printed from the DMV website that states how I can use my e-bike. Otherwise, I always love the "it's downhill, you just can't tell from this angle".

I am so totally certain that they aren't going to pull me over or say anything to me, that I don't worry about my story.

"I'm really glad you asked, constable. This is a device for harnessing the power of ley lines. It channels the psychic energy that flows along the ley lines and stores it in the crystals inside this box, which I then use in my practice as a spiritual healer. Here's my card. If you're interested I also offer special group rates for my "inner man" sessions. Maybe you'd like to invite some of your colleagues along. Oh, you're a bit short of time just now? Well maybe we can have a nice chat next time..."

In New York State, E bikes at the moment are completely illegal Yet I don't think cops have a clue.

Now if I had a gas engine I'd be pulled over in a second

So I'm waiting for the day; and to tell you the truth, I don't know what I'm going to say, just play stupid I guess.

THat being said cops have stared at me, I fake pedal and my bike looks stealth, most, really everyone has no clue its electrically assisted.

The problem is not now but when E bikes get more popular and kids start riding them in a unsafe and crazy manner, I can assure everyone this will happen, then they will ruin it for everyone.

This happened on the mountain bike trails in the local state park. Technically we are not allowed to ride in the park but in the late 80's and early 90's we rode left no impact on the trails. Then the kids came and tore up the trails to make jumps and such and the rest is history with a endless ongoing fight to allow us to ride in the park.

Kids and irresponsible adults will start zipping around traffic at 40 + MPH someone will get hurt, the papers will latch onto the story and the rest will be history.

Till then I'm enjoying the peace that now exist and a piece of me kinda hopes E Bikes stay low key and not really takes off, of course I want E bike to get popular for all the right reasons its just I know a bad element will emerge and ruin it for all of us

I have been pulled over while riding my ebike by a police officer directing traffic during our annual Grape & Wine Festival.
I was abit nervous as ebikes were illegal here at the time. The officer called me over to a barricade blocking a main road and said "hey you better be careful riding that thing there's alot of drunks on the road today"I smiled, gave him a laugh and said that I most certainly would be careful and off I rode. :D

Ha..

I gave the cop my bike and said " Here.. take it for a rip ! careful with the brakes.. those disks grab hard and i don't want you going over the bars ! lol ".. Drainbrain with power readout in full view.

He came back with the EV grin and said "Hey... now that's fun ! "

ok.. so he's my brother in law.. but still !

I'm gonna tell him -- This , officer, is my workout machine, these are adjustable compression resistance factor hubs and I will be running for Gov of California in the next election so I do B buffin up.

Wisconsin state law basicly says that as long as the power unit (gas or electric) can be removed from the bike, then it is still a bike, and has to fallow all laws that govern bicycles, like having lights after dark, being regestard with the city (like anyone does that), while being power assited you must keep your speed under 30mph, or any lower posted speed limit, you also are not alowed to use your assit on bicycle paths/trails, must have a learners permit or drivers license to operate it.
so if they pull me over they better have a reason.

I think all-in-all the Wisconsin laws have a lot of common sense in them and are the most realistic/workable that I've heard on the entire planet. Though some will certainly and understandably object to the no bike path part, I can live with that.
