New to the forum and new to ebikes - Hello!

I'm 50 years old, 180lbs, not in bad shape, deciding what ebike to buy. Some years ago I broke all the bones in the arch of my foot. Ideally I shouldn't put too much pressure on it, light pedalling is okay.

I'm looking to buy a high-end ebike with the greatest range possible.

Have it narrowed down to Stromer or Pedego and would welcome any other suggestions.

I like Stromer because of the look and their reputation, but it's pedal assist only. That's concerning due to the problem with my foot.

I need a bike that can give me decent range on level terrain with average to no pedalling and able to get me up a relatively steep hill with very easy pedalling. The Stromer boost mode I don't think is enough in itself, and I don't mind peddling if the resistance isn't too great on my foot

Pedego is another good option. I like the look of the ST1 more than the Interceptor II. But the Pedego has the throttle and from what I've read it should go up a fairly steep hill on throttle only?

While I'm pedaling on flat terrain and smooth bike trails using a little throttle constantly but at low speeds can I get an afternoon riding on a charge?

In freewheeling mode which bike has the least resistance?

Thank you.

Welcome to ES****Do this before your first post or now (it's retroactive)*****
Please go to the User Control Panel, select Profile, and then enter your city, state/province, and country into the Location field (country minimum) and save it. Once done, your location will appear in every post so you won't have people asking where you are ever again. This will help people help you. Example: Wylie, TX, USA. or just USA, but country as a minimum, and country is the most important. There are many cities with the same name all over the world. Without knowing what country you are in it's hard to make any recommendations. Thank you.

Convert your own bike. A lot cheaper and you can build what you want.

This forum is heavily biased towards build your own.

From the sound of it, I'd say stay away from pedelec only anything. You definitely need the throttle. You also want a fairly large battery if range is a priority. So make sure to get something that will allow you to easily add a second battery.

Or, as others will chime in, just get a good quality kit, including a higher capacity battery than typical with a pedego. 15 ah is generally enough for most. And in a kit, you have the option of going to 48v for better performance on hills.

Hello, first post here, have been lurking for a while.

I have a stromer ST1 Platinum and can share some of my experience with it. I have had the bike for ten months and have 1400 miles on it with no miles in the snow or salt.

I have found the biggest factor about the Stromer that is seldom talked about is the user code that controls what they call sensor sensitivity. The code is 1004 and the range is from 10 to 90 by tens. Essentially a one to nine range. The difference in changing this setting is huge for controlling how hard you have to push on the pedals. At the stock setting of 50 it takes moderate effort just to make the power flow but at 90 you barely have to turn the cranks to get significant boost. I really like it there as pressing too hard makes my knees sore the next day.

I assure you that if you can get a test ride and try different settings along with adjusting the assist level from Eco thru Power that you will find that maintaining 18 mph is about the same effort as walking. As for range the battery is 522 watt- hours and of course consumption varies with speed. I'm a math geek and numbers guy. At an average 14 MPH I use about 10 watt-hours per mile and at 22 MPH I use about 18 watt-hours per mile. This is with hardly any energy added from my legs, just enough to turn the cranks at a comfortable cadence with light pressure on the pedals.

In summary I really like this bike and with the torque sensor setting changed you may not need a hand throttle. If you have any questions I am happy to share.

I ended up going with the Neo Jumper (26" model) by easy motion.
Like yourself I was also considering the Stromer.

I enjoy bicycles, and was happy how electric bikes let me get back to riding.

Do some test rides before you decide.
The dealers didn't always understand their own equipment, so be sure you have done your homework first.
I wanted a full suspension bike, and the Neo Jumper works well for me.

I have some more information that might be of interest to Uniquest, or others.

The OP mentioned that he was aware of the Stromer's Boost mode but was concerned that it might not be strong enough for hill climbing. Well, I did some digging and it turns out there is a code for that too. Boost is originally limited to 20 km/hr , about 12 mph. The code is 3775 and on my model the range is from 10 to 70 by tens. I set it to 30 and sure enough my Boost speed went to 18 mph. At the full 70 the bike now does about 25 mph on level ground without pedalling and held 22 mph going up a medium hill near here.

This hill is one of the reasons I became interested in E-bikes. It is the last ride segment coming home from the near by parkway that I enjoy. On my mountain bike it was always a drag to have to save some energy for the ride home and then have to drop into granny gear and spin my way up it if I was tired. When I first got the Stromer I thought I was taking it easy on the motor to go up it at 10 mph but that made the motor pretty warm, but not hot. Then following the wisdom of a Guru here I hit it at a higher gear and higher assist level and at 18-20 mph the motor case and battery are barely even above ambient, so I'm thankful to have learned to "Attack them hills".

I could not find a comprehensive list of all Stromer codes out there. A few here and there, that's it. The online manual has a few but didn't even have the one to switch the display from kilometers to miles. I had to hunt it down myself. Does anyone here have a full list of codes ??

Take care and have fun - DS
