Hi all,

I have been contemplating converting my side x side to electric. I have never done a conversion before and really know nothing about doing this. I thought i would reach out to the Sphere community to help me design this project! I am not on a tight budget but would like to keep this economical as far as cost goes. I live in Canada so keep that in mind for suppliers. Here is the specs on my Sxs

https://www.atv.com/specs/polaris/utility-utv/2009/ranger-tm/hd.html\

Some thoughts and things to consider
I only use this vehicle on my 200 acre property
It is cold in the winter (but have a heated shop)
Would like to have similar performance (40hp with cvt)
has a separate High-low reverse gear box that i would connect the elec motor to
has a cooling system
will require 12v for some stock systems

Thank you all. looking forward to your comments!

There is an existing cooling system for the combustion engine. Some electric motors are liquid cooled so if a liquid cooled motor is needed the Infrastructure is in place for this. Could possibly be used for batteries too??

I own a ranger EV a few years now that I am now swapping out the lead acid blocks for a li ion pack in the coming weeks. They come with a nice ABM motor and sevcon controller which sold me on it after checking it out. It was a few years old and like new and best of all the price was right. If your good with the mid size ranger, it would be worth checking out as it may be a easier way to go or at least see how they did it.

I like to bigger ranger as we have kids. Also would like to do a full conversion to get into the sport.

If your building, you may want to keep your eye out for a nearby wrecked EV that may be a good donor to repurpose the motor- battery cells and some other items that could be a fit. Something like a Nissan Leaf has a great battery that you can reconfigure the cell - modules into what you need-wish. Quite a few folks here have experience building with them and a few repurposed the motors as well. Chevy Volt or Bolt would be worth a look also.

If your looking for a battery chemistry more suitable in frozen conditions, the lithium titanate may be worth a look. They are slightly lower voltage so you would need a few more cells in series to get the voltage you need vs the more common Li ion. They don't burn either which is a consideration keeping it in your shop.

The Japanese Mitsubishi i-MIEV he lithium titanate cells and a 45kw motor ideal for your build. Don't know if you could import one? Nice thing is the battery out lasts the car so will have loads of life left.

Kealo check out this guy, I suspect his atv has the same transmission yours does, might be helpful.
