How much battery is too much?

i do hope that rig is 3WD, if it isn't, why not :)
Originally it was a Push-Me Pull-You with the RWD mounted on the Trailer: This proved to be a major problem with the trailer wheel introducing axial torque through the frame and over-driving my steering, sort of like adding a weight to a dangling rope and then twisting it so it oscillated back and forth. The serious safety issue was resolved by moving the wheel from the trailer to the rear axle of the bike -> creating a true 2WD, plus I injected foam into the trailer frame to stiffen it up which hugely reduced the trailer axial flex.

^ Except for the winter tires, this is the commuter version I ride today having a modest range of 90 Seattle-hilly miles, and at 15S10P/63V 50Ah it weighs in at 127 lbs. In comparison, the 2011 Cross-Country version must have weighed around 240-290 lbs. fully loaded: Going into the unknown, I carried a lot of tools and spare parts. I would love to develop a spreadsheet that evaluates the range per weight. I think I'd have to de-rate my controllers to limit the top speed assist down to about 33 mph for better results. Select a known route, do loops - whatever. Same tests would have to be applied with the trailer attached so we could evaluate the affects of drag. Keep adding battery until I have no more to add  - and then we'll add water for dummy weight.

I fear this is a project will have to wait till I'm between contracts

Hilarious.

What is being said saying is, more battery doesn't increase range in linearly. But, if you can handle riding with more weight, then go for it. However, setting up the bike correctly or very well from the start isn't always easy but an important idea, this becomes more important as with more weight. Any flaws in the setup will be exposed much more quickly on an ebike than a just riding around on a poorly setup bicycle.

Now that I'm sick, I don't ride dirt much more than 5 miles at a time. So I put the same 12t motor on another bike, with better suspension.

sorry your sick...glad to hear your still riding (whatever distance).

both my trikes carry 2kW, with one of them able to easily carry an additional 4kW.
I don't ride that far any more, so it's always 'just' the 2kW per trike.
BTW
Trikes FTW

Hi Dogman

I got a warp also recently to build up. Wondering your impression on the bike overall. Thinking of top of top tube if two will not fit the little triangle and also below down tube for 6 smaller 6s bricks total. 18s 2p spread out in two places, with controller off the back. It will be a mid drive.

Sorry to hear your sick. Fatigue, sounds like what I had and mis diagnosed for way too long. "Lyme". Get checked for it as it does not go away for many folks and can wreak things if goes on too long. If you have been on doxiy, the standard test will show a false negative. Symptoms come back when I run down too much and don't eat right. Need to see someone that knows what they are doing. I am not a doctor, but learning the hard way.

best wishes

I think it rides great (when it is not broken).

Sweet build...how many beers does that front mount ice chest hold?

Anything that puts a case >120mm wide between your knees is too much.

Not to mention if it begins to swell from over charging....

At times good beer is all the fuel you need... Seriously though, this bike is an example of what a talented builder can do, IMHO.
