Hi Folks
I’m new here and stumbled across this site while looking for info for my next build and found this place to be a great spot so I thought I would make myself known with an intro to my next project.
Similar to others here I own an ebike (or two..) and have longed for something with better performance while having a keen sense of DIY.

A couple of years back I completed a build based on an old “Healing Cruiser” , it’s a bike that many kids from yesteryear had around the neighbourhood, very basic but some had 3 gears, equipped with 20” rims.

The build was to be something fun which It absolutely was, It’s still running but not used that often as it’s far too noisey as a daily ride.
I took it to the local drag strip and with some pedal assistance managed just under 80kph over the 1/4 mile with a hundy kilos of passenger on top, I’ve had it over that speed chasing a car but only measured in units of fear and child-like giggles to myself.

There’s still a build thread elsewhere but to summarise, It started as this

Ended up as this

It’s the kind of bike that puts a smile on your dial every time you ride it.

For the next build there are a few criteria:

Keep it fun: I’d still like to keep it in the fun/wtf? zone, not something that looks like it was built for purpose.

Keep it safe..er: Fairly sure you’d agree I was pushing the limits of a 40-50yr old frame (the bike).

Hybrid: Electric for convenience and initial acceleration and also to get around the obvious turbine noise issue, turbine for the odd fun session even when there’s not a drag strip about.

Better performance: Initial thoughts are around the 3-5Kw electric mark, I managed to come across another similar turbine, and as they say two turbines are better than one!

Style of bike: this is where it gets conflicting, I’d like to use the style of a chopper or something in that 70’s era, but the stability and strength of a modern bike without it looking like a strong modern bike, hopefully that makes sense..

Will post updates as I go but feel welcome to chip in, it’s in the thought stages at the moment but I’d like to have it up and running in a few months, so ideas are welcome.

Nice bike. I also have built a ebike gas generator hybrid to allow me to cruise randomly for hours. I use it similar to your profile - ebike only around neighborhood, short rides, and on bike trails. Then if I want to go on longer rides I fire up the generator in either 240 (~13mph) or 420W (~20mph+) mode or I can try to eek out only one ebike and charge at destination via a wall socket or the generator.

It looks like you can really fit a battery right above that gas tank, which would help you add weight to keep from wheelies.

Cool bike. :thumb: I bet the turbine keeps people from tailgating.

Adding a battery + motor is going to add a lot of weight to the bike so you may be pushing things on frame strength. Maybe figure out how much weight you can tolerate and work backwards to size the motor and battery.

You certainly want to keep away from the exhaust, tried to cook a sausage with it once but it just blew it off the stick and stunk of Kero..
The frame will be a new one, there's no way I'm going to use the original one and come out unscathed.
There's so much useful information here and I'm only a fraction through the content, it's forcing me to re-think my approach considerably, Especially like alex_2d 's scooter
Need some of those batteries!

Something's going on in new zealand. Disproportionate amount of reactive propulsion. Amazing build. Amazing restoration of the bike. 10/10 :bigthumb:

Thanks!, Hope the new one has a good visual appeal.
The fuel tank will have to increase in size a bit, the current one only gives me 9 minutes at Max thrust so weight is going to be challenging.
The good thing about turbines is their weight @ approx 1.5kg i guess..

It still blows me away that people can put so much creative energy into making a highly polluting toy. You're going to blow kerosene fumes out causing noise and stench, when you have at your fingertips the silent, highly efficient, and powerful beauty that is modern electric drive systems, at a time the world is smothering in carbon, for what? To have a couple of giggles? Smdh...

My gosh. It's a frickin' low use novelty and he happens to live in a country that generates 82% of its electricity from renewables. A little perspective please.
