Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

Jay, thought you would like this since your boys are that much older. Here is Jet on a chopped Ezip my dad built for him. 25V @ 20 Amps, This thing will pull me around at 15MPH. Anway, the goal this year is to get him riding it and being able to stop without crashing. He still has few months to got before his 3rd bday, got to have him riding it by then.

20Amps? Ha, you should step it down to 10 or less for that little Hero, you think he can handle it?

We will see one way or another, I got a throttle stop on it for now, limits twist to about 1/3 of the way. My need to go to 1/2 as its so slow its hard to balance.

hey i saw your post on the stealth thread. looks like a great pack you made for the fighter. I'm keen to see reports of its performance (video or otherwise).

Can you tell us about that bms? lvc, hvc, balance, cell number (daisy chain?) max amps and where you got it? yeah i dont ask for much... maby a link will sufice haha

also im wondering if youve steped it up from 18s have you gone and bought a new charger? or are you using that gnarly 3xpsu and turnigy charger contraption that was going to be used on the mad ass or whatever?

Sorry for lack of replies, not enough hours in the day lately.

Rix, looks like you're starting your little fella young! Mine eldest (5) has mastered a normal pushbike pretty well now so pretty soon he'll be getting an ebike. Maybe even a converted little peewee 50 or similar.

Ken, yeah the new fighter pack came out nice. It was a heap of work though, took me the best part of a day. The battery pack is a 21S 16ah unit made from 8ah zippy packs. 6x5S+2x6S. The BMS is 21S and rated to 80A continuous and double that burst but the motor doesn't pull 100 amps for more than a second or 2 so this should be fine. It does LVC and balancing, the LVC is a little low for lipo at 2.75v but I have the CA LVC set at 3.4v/cell so it should cut out before any cell gets too low. It's basically just there to stop any issues if a cell suddenly dies and jumps off the cliff. And a cell that sags to 2.75 under load and trips the BMS is going to bounce straight back to 3.0v+ as soon as the load is removed. It's not 110% ideal but more than adequate. I did buy a new charger to go with it, just for convenience and general use. But I'll be modding the beastly sever PSU based charger to suit it shortly for when I need a fast recharge. Realistically though I'll never need to recharge the bike in too much of a hurry. It's rare these days if I can squeeze in a ride on the weekend much more than an hour so I have more battery capacity than I have spare time.

Here's a vid from the weekend on a new bike I've build up as per my FB page for anyone that's following there (http://www.facebook.com/hyenaelectricbikes)
Upgraded mac motor running 18S and 35A on a 12 fet controller in a timma modded specialized bighit. This was supposed to be for my wife but I quite enjoy riding it
I have pink accessories to go on it, I"ll have to take another photo of me on it afterwards for AussieJesters amusement :p

What a great little ebike you got there. Climbs good, handles good, descends good, I like it. The Neutron kit you put together for the Yosemite trip is back with my dad now, since I got the FIghter, and my uncle is riding the piss out of it. Your Neutron kit is a great little kit for sure.

Rick

Bighit looks good, love Pauls work, so much so I built my own crudely

Even though sometimes I want more power, the 8t and ride quality/weight of the bighit is a real sweet spot for ebikes

You love them narrow bars or is that a camera illusion

How many A/h can you get in there at 18s, mine runs about the same 2500w but in a 26'wheel 15s@40A

Nice to see it rolling

Cheers mate, glad it's stayed in the family and is still getting regular use now that your dad has the mighty bomber.
I'm actually naughtily eyeing off another bike for purchase that would be as near to perfect as possible for a light weight all rounder. It's a scott genius 40. It has 150mm travel front and rear and a nifty 3 way lockout that switches both the front and rear shock from full travel to 90mm travel to locked in 2 clicks. It also weighs just 12kg (26lb) and has some nice triangle space. The big hit is sweet but the suspension is a bit too springy to pedal hardish

Would you share a link to the bms as I got the batterypack as your's, Don t you have trouble to get batteries from hk right now with iata rules ?
I'm getting lipo from the local HK warehouse so only local shipping rules apply. BMS is this one

Yeah I like narrow bars, I don't like replacing brake pads so try to dart through gaps as fast as possible without slowing down :p
Mine just holds 18S 10ah - the box is quite narrow at what I'd guess off the top of my head is only around 70mm wide.

In other news, I desperately want one of these! I'm not sure how well it could keep up on the single track but either way you could get some rad shots with it.

Hyena, yes a nice frame with reasonable components. like the idea. Just had my Norco A-line fitted with doctor-bas torque arms.
I'm curious, why the switch from a purpose build ebike frame (phasor) to retrofitting a DH bike ?

Hyena, does this BMS handle regen?
Haven't tested it yet, gotta get my programming dongle back from another ES member so I can up the regen HVC from 18S voltage to 21S.
It does have a seperate charge input so perhaps not...

Nope I've been slack :p
I was hoping to have my new website made by now and was going to do a vid announcing that, the FB page and the shoutouts but haven't gotten around to it. Sooooon.
Oh and I'm sure I liken Frankencycle early on, I'm getting your updates ?

Here's another build I'm working on at the moment. I'm doing this as a favour for a mate but it's promptly reminded my why I don't offer to build whole bikes for other people - it's so time consuming!
The frame is one of SamD's (of Ballarat Electric Bikes fame) modded creations. I had it sandblasted and then powdercoated pearl white and it's come up looking pretty nice. It's designed to take 18S2P lipo but the guy I'm building it for doesn't want anything too high powered (or expensive) so for now it has a small 5.8ah 16S lipo pack with BMS. The rest of the electrics are my new geared neutron kit so it should make for a pretty neat, reasonably light weight bike for tooling around urban areas.

Hyena,
what is "my new geared neutron kit"? Sam is doing a frame for me at the moment....

Sam's moded frames are great, i bet that would be rip around well being so light.

regarding the scott bike that looks good. i do like the scott bikes . my 29 scott has performed fairly well but I wanted to put it out there that the frame isnt all that rigid through the rear suspension (sideways) . it has a bit of flex. but i will also say i have hammered it pretty hard for a year or so. many many jumps, skate park, pot holes at 60kph etc.. i think if it was used as intended as a xc bike with a sub 100kg rider and no motor and battery it would be totally solid. maby that model is different though.

Hey it's looking good Jay. An nice agile frame match for the geared neutron kit indeed. Another couple of these frames just found their way out into the wild so it's rewarding to see. Your kit might be a nice match for the lower tank I've built into PRW's new ÜberCommuter frame, I'll drop you a message.

I'm wanting a commuter and I still have one Phasor
Fair enough, why the A-line though ? I love me a nice plush offroad/downhill bike but unless you have lockouts on the rear shock and can firm up the front it's like commuting on a pogo stick if you plan to put in any real pedalling effort
That's why I'm looking at the above scott because it can easily switch to suit either task.

Ken, thanks for the headsup on the Scott. I wouldn't be pushing it too hard and fast - basically commuting through the week and more nimble sort of single track on the weekend - the sort of stuff I posted in the vid above. Running a light geared set up would prevent me going stupidly fast or with kidney extracting torque so the frame should hold up fine. Then I have the offroad bruisers for hard and fast duties - essentially electric dirt bikes

Cool, I was just about to email you about a similar topic with a redesign request for added hyena-ised goodness :)

I've been looking for a rear shock, haven't purchased one yet and that's the last thing that I need. Thanks for the heads up. Just a frame that's been lying around and if I want to push it at speed I know it will be safe.

hey Hyena,
this is up your way - could you pop around and check this out for me? Looks like a top prize for the next international frockfest.

Bonus points for front derailleur use of a rear derailleur. (Yep - that's an actual thing now).

No arguments from me. Reminds me of my first pre-ES bike.

Or was that last post a confession?

Wow. Just, wow...
I dont know where to start. I love the upside down roadie bars, they must give a horse riding like experience. And then there's the 12v car battery, that needs to be charged... from a 12v car battery. And then there's the obvious, that work of art that is a chain and chain derailleur driven front wheel! Maybe he's heard that front wheel hub motors were prone to causing fork failure - so he stretched that 100mm dropout to 135mm, and used a rear wheel.

Same here! I first used the same sort of motor half arsedly welded to and old frame though I wasnt a thinker like this guy and had it running through the rear gears like all the other sheep. I even bravely admitted it in my first post of this thead all those years ago. Sadly it seems most of the photo links have died. Probably for the best :p

You know what, I'm totally going to steal that guys photo and use it for my own advertising purposes

This the shit...errrr something. All the advantages of a mid drive and front wheel drive. Gee, I wonder if there would be some torque steer issues? Architectonic said it best
The above is actually quite creative.

A horrible solution that shouldn't be ridden, but creative none the less.
