Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

So I forgot to post this the other day. Over easter I went down to a friends farm camping, took my fighter and got some nice shots. One of the guys also had a little whipper snipper (26cc) powered buggy that I strapped my gopro to and had a bit of fun with. Unfortunately he couldn't get traction to save himself so it didnt turn out who I wanted. A very near miss at the end as per the thumbnail!
I didnt realise how close I cut it and he was miles back so wouldn't have seen. oops!

Here's a few nice photos as per my post in the stealth thread:

great photo.

I'm prety jelous of your fighter i must say. and how you came to own just the shell is a cool story.

I think you should get Kepler to employ his rc flying skills and chase you around with a normal or muti/copter ... next time one of you is in the others area/city..

any good trails around the farm?

edit:
btw what happened to the crown motor? major delays?

Thanks mate, it'd be even better if I wasn't dying of cancer at the time and didn't know if I'd be around to build anything better!
The upside is that egg timer has been tipped on it's side for now so bigger and better things are on the way. Plans for my own custom frame(s) seem to get stopped in their tracks every time I start to make progress but I'll get there eventually. Sooner rather than later if I win the lottery or otherwise find a way to not go to work every day and spend weekend time with the family :p

Definately, I'd love to do that with Kepler or meet up with a local RC flyer (gotta be local to me otherwise I wouldnt have my bike) and shoot some cool footage. I actually bought another RC quadcopter (smaller RTF model) that I was going to use a 720p keychain cam on to practise with before going all out on another large scale quad but the bloody thing is still plagued with issues and doesn't fly right out of the box like it should. I get that there's a zillion settings and variables when making your own from an assortment of varied parts but I expected a basic pre-fab one would work. Sadly not... I may have just been unlucky, I dunno. The little ladybird one I had previously was OK but it was a little too small to attach a camera too. This one I have now is in between that and my big one (which I sold) so it should be up to the task, if I can just get hte bloody thing to fly right.

Not alot actually, compared to other trails I normally ride. Though I didnt get alot of time to explore. Most were either wide open spaces or 4WD type tracks which aren't too interesting. Exploring different territory was nice though. I'll edit a small vid later but it wont be terribly interesting.

btw what happened to the crown motor? major delays?
I'm looking at a few options but the price and demand were the 2 major hold ups. I may still get one to try but at the moment I have over a grand tied up in other samples on their way to me which I think will be better prospects. Hint - wider stator motor and a 24 fet sine wave controller
I have a pile of steel tubing (thick heavy stuff no cromo but will do for prototyping) laying around in the garage and really need to find time to fashion it into something that resembles a bike frame so I can start testing this higher powered gear.

Oh, and here's my latest vid, from footage I recorded a month or 2 back and haven't had time to edit.
Buzzing around at the start then doing a bit of exploring later on.
I guess you'd call the trail at the start a single track but I think it was more like half track - my arms got some nice exfoliation

another cool vid. yeah thats a tight trail, i love that sort of riding in over grown trails, more challenging = more fun :)

YES! I like the sound of that. you guna start getting your welding skills going? btw really if its gunna be that high powered i wouldn't have a problem making or buying a steel frame bike. arnt most motor bike frames steel?

BTW, awesome video Jay, nice scenic singltrack next to the surf. Think I was born in the wrong country.

Went back to Kurnell I see...one of the handful of places I'll miss from Sydney.
That being said, I'd trade almost any of the Sydney tracks for the tracks available to me down here in Canberra now. :)
I'll have to get a move on and buy that action cam soon so I can give your videos some competition Jay. :D

Cheers

Yeah going to have a crack at welding, I hve a 200 amp mig so I'll see how it goes. At the least I'll tack the project together and then maybe take it to a pro welder and get them to run around it all properly. That way I'll know it's safe and strong. Though for these testing purposes what ever I can pull off will probably suffice.
Not sure about motorbike frames. I know I've heard of some boasting light weight alloy frames but I suspect for the majority that have big capacity or high output engines and extra few kg for a heavier frame is going to be drops in the ocean. Probably the cheaper ones are steel and the higher performance ones are some sort of alloy.

Maybe Rixy, maybe :p
It's not a cromotor as such but essentially the same sort of thing. I have the cromotor to fall back on but I like to do things my way. I suspect that theme may be evident in this thread already :p

Nope, a few cliffs around, though the scenery and terrain is quite similar. I have more footage which I'll edit up later in part 2.
The going got quite tough after where this video ended and I spent much of the time lugging my bike up rock faces and doing more trials type riding where the conditions allowed me to actually sit on the thing. It's certainly more a hiking trail and I suspect not intended for bikes (+/- actually being allowed... )
This is where I went

bundeena-ride.jpg

Jay, with your 200 amp mig, are you running flux core .045 wire, or .035 with Argon gas? I only ask because I believe a mig running .035 with Argon will weld cromolly tubing much better than the flux core and much much easier than tungsten inhert gas (TIG) or less commonly known as gas tungsten arc (GTA) welder. I know tig is a much more flexible welder and can weld any metalic material from soda can thickness up to 10mm aluminum with the press of the pedal, but for welding cromolly tubing at say .065 and thicker, the mig .035 and argon using stitch technique is king. Just my opinion of course.

Exactly why I bought this welder
It's both gas and gasless, for now while I'm learning I'll go gasless and then once I sort myself out a bit I might invest in a bottle.

In other news, I've just been told to pack my bags as I'll be heading to the US in a few weeks :)
I'll be staying in San Fran CBD but have managed to delay my return flight 2 days so I can take a look around and do some ebike riding.
Any suggestions ? Obviously there's the immediate SF area, golden gate park and maybe across the GG bridge. But I'm thinking what would be really cool is to hire a car and drive out to yosemite. Any locals keen to join me ? Or better yet lend me an ebike or some ebike gear ?
The alternative is to ship a kit to my hotel, buy a walmart bike on arrival and do the conversion in my hotel room
The only issue is the batteries, I can make the harnesses at home so it's a simple process to assemble with limited tools but it's kinda dead money for 2 days.

The other thoughts on my mind is what treasure I can bring back :p
For years I've been looking at stuff in the US and thinking "damn, if only I could get that here, pity international shipping is so damn expensive" and now that I've got a very decent luggage allowance (will be flying business so can bring back 100kg of shit! ) I can't think of a single thing to buy! Maybe a cruiser/chopper frame ? Aussies remind me what unobtainium I should be looking for!

Jay, I will meet you in Yosemite if you can give me some notice. Its 4 hours away by car. I don't have two ebikes though. Just the Bomber. When you get closer to departing for the US, I will PM my cell#.

Rick

Cool man! I'll be jealous of you on the bomber while I ride some POS but it's all about the scenery on this trip and not tearing around in my usual fashion.

It'll be mid week though if that's an issue for you ? My meeting finishes on Wednesday the 8th of May at lunch time so I'll likely hire a car then and head out. Unless there's others in san fran who are up for a road trip. Looks like a 4 hr drive from san fran as well so we'll likely arrive around the same time.

@Jay - Sweet, I also near San Francisco and let me know whenever we are going meet up. It would be nice to meet you in person and I will be your first time encounter deaf guy like me. 8)

When are you coming to SF?

Cool, unfortunately the only sign language I know is largely considered rude and you might have trouble lip reading my accent
I might start another thread see who's about/interested in a meet up.

I'm still waiting on my finalised flight info but at this stage it looks like I fly in to LA Monday morning on the 6th May then fly up to San Fran around lunch time. I'll be free in the afternoon to explore the local area then have a dinner that night and am then tied up until Wednesday lunch time (8th)
I'll be staying HERE. Looks a bit fancy, they might frown on me wheeling a bike through the lobby and building it up in my room

Isn't San Fran the 'gay' capital of the world? Coincidence? Perhaps an American man Jay? :p

I used to also want parts etc from USA back in the early-mid 90s but now with the net in full force we can pretty much obtain anything we want and with the Aussie dollar stronger than the green back we get it heaps cheaper than ever before...

Have a safe trip, careful what you do bring back ::cough:: HiV :: cough :: we want you around for awhile longer for those vids of you flying over the handle bars, hours of entertainment on movie nights LOL...

haha I dunno, from memory Sydney comes pretty close (I steer clear of Sydney CBD when the mardi gras is on!)
But that's just more ammo for you to say I'm going from one gay city to another :p

Yeah most stuff we can get here now but it's still fairly rude with the shipping rates.
Where can I get me a cheap basman frame AJ ??
Need any bits for your cruiser ?

Rude? Naw you don't have to, and I probably bring my daughter can do interpreter for me. Don't forget to check out ilia shop and Edward Lyen too. :)

We will be on vacation on may 8 to 13 if you are going to stay at San Francisco and I probably would be able to meet up with you.

This works out perfect, I am on off Thursdays and Fridays. Meet in Yosemite, see the sights, drink some pints, it will be a good time. Who else is gonna get in on this?

Hah yeah a google revealed that, I thought there might be some or similar where I'm headed though with California being the land of the beach cruiser.

Cool, got a link ?
I need to get cracking on finding or making a cruiser frame, I've got my 5403 laced to a 24x3" rim (same as the one I sent you), set of black marz forks (same as yours too actually!) and 24 fet controller sitting here ready to go. I just need the frame to bolt it to and I'll be in business.

haha actually I'm planning to spend some time with methods and liveforphysics while I'm over there. The possiblity of walking away with a busted arse after shenanigans with those 2 maniacs is infinitely more likely than your suggestion :p

Sweet!
I'm not sure if I'll do friday now, my damn schedule is so tight. At this stage I'm thinking I'll leave san fran at lunch time, drive straight to yosemite and sleep there the night then get up thursday morning, ride all day (gotta find somewhere to recharge at lunch) and then head off later afternoon and drive back to santa cruz. I'll then spend the best part of friday there before driving back up to san fran to fly home that evening.

Still gotta work out some e-wheels. I wonder where the nearest stealth USA dealer is ? If they loan me a fighter I can do a nice review of the new 2013 model and give them some good advertising coverage with sweet HD videos shot in yosemite
