am i mistaken, or does this Motrix Friction drive has a dual diameter roller fitted ??..

I don't think so; there's nothing about it in the specs. Possibly the roller is waisted to ensure that it runs straight.

So far, I haven't seen a neater solution than rhitee's for multi-diameter rollers.
