Instant Start 18 fet Infineon Boards are here...

@ ZapPat:
I am quite sure that "Tolerance(V)" is a delta voltage. After a low voltage cut off the input voltage needs to rise the programmed "Tolerance(V)" over the low voltage level to turn the controller on again.
One time I have programmed the "Tolerance(V)" to 1V and as my battery voltage gose down to the low voltage level at high current, the motor goes on off on ... quite fast.

Thanks Sam! It makes sense to have some kind of hysterisis for the LVC.

My wedding is on August 1st so this thread is getting a little sleepy.... I dont know how but I ended up as the wedding planner.
Starting August 2nd, I am going to spool back up to full steam again.

I have ordered a shipment of CA's, another shipment of Fets, and I am going to start offering some killer combo packages for those of you who want to go crazy

If someone would like to help -> Could you please help me locate some precision shunts?
My ideal shunt would be:

250uOhms
2W
Surface or thru-hole
Cost -> Gotta keep it down, but this is an important part - I would consider up to $5 each.

If I could get an order of those I would outfit every controller with a calibrated shunt

DUDE

You know how many times I have searched Digikey and mouser

howthuwtf?

Those are AWESOME!
Exactly what i wanted!!!

4W = 250uOhms * I*I

I = SQRT(2W/250uOhms) = 127A
Could not be better

The package size is around 7mm x 7mm... I dont have the board in front of my but if the ebike god is smiling down on us they may just solder right in.
I am guying 50 of them
Anyone who wants one can have it for the price of shipping.

P.S> August 2nd? Oh yea... You dont know me  I have my priorities straight!

I took some measurements:

APX.

Top of the board:
center to center of the pad >11mm
inside edge to inside pad edge is 9mm

That is too wide, BUT

The bottom of the board looks perfect
There is a 5mm gap between GND and PHASE(-) right under where the stock shunt is mounted
That leaves 1mm to solder on each side

I am going to remove the old shunts and solder these to the bottom of the board.
I will use the old pads as the new tap points for the CA (or maybe I will stick to my modified 4-wire measurement tap points).

Oh man, I am excited. I am going to solder up 10 of these to work out a method for consistency so that I dont have to calibrate the controllers.
This will save me a ton of time.

See... All I had to do was ask for help. :p

Only August 2nd? I'd give it a week just to be safe, weddings have a certain effect on women and... I doubt you'll get near a computer.

Oh, Man, I sure hope so! :D

So, giving your entire life away has to have its perks, right? I mean, why else would you get married?!

I have been married for 16 years. Trust me, you won't want to be near the computer on the 2nd.

Congrats, by the way!

Matt

Are you guys implying that Methods leaves the computer to have sex? Amateurs.

I told him that since they've been living together already that the only thing that will change after the 1st is that the sex will stop. He'll have plenty of time on the 2nd, and on the 3rd, and on the 4th...

Are you kidding? Anything romantic makes women um...... _____ as you know what. A wedding, well let just say that he won't be allowed out of the bedroom for a while.

So long as my computer is in the bedroom I will stay in there as long as I have to.....

Gary makes a good point. My wife and I actually did not_____ untill our wedding. I know weird for most people to think about. Once we got married, WOH!! Hang on, I was rarely allowed to catch my breath!

But, just the wedding itself will be enough for any woman (living together or not).

At any rate, I don't plan on bugging Methy for a week or so after the 1st.

Matt

Wedding??? I could have sworn you used the word "wife" before. Was that just practice and getting used to the terminology? Congrats and/or condolences depending on the POV, but regardless I wish you all the happiness. In the meantime, I hope you and Matt hook up, so shipping FETs gets done beforehand. I need a date to know which US address to give you, because at this moment in time I have 3 different FET smugglers on tap.

2 marriage tips:

1. Tell her JohninCR said to let her know that men don't change, so don't bother trying.

2. For you, women change big time.

As long as you both understand 1 and 2, then it's just a matter of good communication for the long haul to work well.

John

ps- If you get cold feet and need to bail, due to el Nino the little summer is great this year, so Costa Rica still has a few more weeks of good weather before the Sep-Oct major rains come. I've got a friend with a nice little hotel less than a mile from where the surfing world championship starts next week, and he has some rooms since it's not officially open or advertised. I'll even lend you a powerful e-bike if you need to drown those kind of sorrows.

I'm sorry, I just realized you mentioned earlier that she made you do the planning. Dude, go put your pants on right now before it's too late... Never mind, it's too late and you're toast, but no problemo some guys are happiest brown and crispy. I still wish you both all the happiness, though I wasn't joking about the cold feet offer. :D

John

She is a Physicist and I am an Engineer....
For those that don't know any Physicists, that means that I HAD to do the planning...

And don't be confused -> I may wear the pants but she brings home the bacon. 20% more than I do to be exact.

But not wanting to be outdone, I make up for it by spending 300% more on my hobbies

Sorry, I forgot you mentioned that before too. She must be cool, because I never met a female physicist before. You're off the hook...good catch.

btw,
Tell her JohninCR says they need to get that big-ass accelerator up and running, so they can figure out how to control gravity. I'm still waiting on my Jetson's type vehicle that those like her promised back when I was a kid. 8)

John

They totaly tried that on MythBusters, (more than one episode), and came up with some really cool ideas.

I wonder how long untill mods move this thread due to its wandering subject matter...

My thread.
We are taking a break

We will start up on 18 fet Infineon controllers again soon enough.
Everybody knows my threads wander

She's way too hot to be a like any physicist I've ever seen!  Hell, I've only met one female physicist before, a lady who worked at the old Rocketdyne, and she was about 50 and never married. I was a young (25...) aerospace engineer and back then, there were just not that many women in the aerospace world anyway.

Anyway, I'm not going to worry about you anymore. I'm betting there's probably two computers in there.

-- Gary

It may be hard to imagine, but I've met a few female physicists during my undergraduate physics classes...

And, oh yeah, one whom I knew was hot, no doubt about that. The attitude, intellect and personality. Her name is publicly plastered on the "aspiring physicists" poster in the physics building, so I doubt Rachael Lafree would care if I mentioned it.

They exist men.

I was an a milanga (Argentine tango dance) a year or so back and I was flirting with this one incredibly woman, to find out during the conversation that she was a physicist at OSU, and that she would be my instructor the following year. After that the flirting (both ways) promptly ended :( . So yes, they definitely do exist!

After the wedding I am going to start a special offer.

This will include a controller (either kit or fully built), a new V2 CA (with the awesome new clamp), and some other goodies.
The controllers will be outfitted with the new 250uOhm shunts and every other mod we have discovered in this thread.

This first batch of CA's will be sold by tonight (check the for sale section later) but I am going to buy 20 more.
Unfortunately I am not allowed to sell these for less than they are sold for on Ebikes.ca.
What I can do is offer free shipping and a huge discount on some of the other stuff I have (like 4110's, piece parts, controllers, etc)

It is time to build a demand for this stuff.

Electric Revolution!

"A 10KW controller and a CA for EVERYBODY!"

As a shunt gets smaller (250u Ohms in this case) the S/N gets lower....
We will see how much the solder tabs vary the resistance value after I do a few.
My guess is that it will be negligible when compared to the shift with temperature.

In my perfect world it would be a slighter tighter fit (and on top of the board) but this is damn good for $1 and 5 minutes.

I am going to (at first) continue to tap in the same spots: On the GND side it will be the closest hole. On the PHASE side it will be the the trace leading to the chip. Even if this is not the idea tap point it will be consistent from board to board. I dont like soldering wires right to the shunt - too janky.

P.S. Anyone who has bought a kit or CA from me is entitled to 1 or 2 of these for the price of shipping.
