A teardown cost analysis of the BMW i3 so accurate that the company thought the secrets were leaked!

Sandy does a very thorough job, very detailed and factual.
But, he never mentions one fundamental engineering criteria…Value Engineering.
The BMW was/is a very cleverly designed and manufactured vehicle, but it has not been very successful from a sales or business standpoint because it has poor value.
At $54,000 it is hard to see the benefits over a <$20,000 ICE equivalent…other than virtue signaling of Green credentials.
And as other EV manufacturers have shown, a high quality compact EV can be produced, usung conventional techniques, at a much lower price.
Even BMWs own Mini EV, only costs $31,000 !
So, yes, using carbon fibre to make basic components is very clever technically,…. But is a major fail in Value Engineering terms.
