Lead acid battery charger kingpan. For lithium.

Hi,

I use a Mean well 48 lead acid charger (PB-360P-48) for my Headway 16s LiFePO4 pack.
Charging characteristics are similar and both have CC mode. CV mode is also trimmable on Mean Well.

They say the balacing needs of a Lithium BMS make a lead acid charger not 100% compatible as a charger alternative. So this would mean the battery will not reach 100% full charge state.
But it works fine for me. The charger will turn its green led on when the charge proces is ready.

I have seen official electric scooter manufacturers which sell slightly altered and relabeled Mean-Well lead acid chargers to charge the Lithium batteries inside. Also people use 4S high C rated LiFePO4 batteries (such as A123) as a light weight replacement for their ICE engine starter batteries.

Would like to read more info from the experts though

Don't call me an expert. But in my crude understanding of it, if the charger put out too much current in cc mode at the end of the charge, it would then make the BMS work hard draining it out.

This perhaps, could cause excess heat. Wear out the bms premature. Perhaps.

So if you can turn the current way down on the cc, then it should be ok I'd think.

If there is no bms, you might consider undercharging by .1 or .05v per cell. Then monitor closely to make sure overcharge can't happen easily.

Lead acid charger can work well. or works half. with lithium batteries.

If the lithium battery has cut bms and overload there is no problem.

Lead acid charger is three phases.

In the absorption phase voltage can be higher than the Battery. When it comes into operation BMS overload of any cell. The charger goes to flotation. When the load current is small, the charger goes to flotation.

In flotation. if the voltage is at or above the charging voltage of the lithium battery. The battery is charged. and the cells are balanced. If the voltage is lower. The battery is not fully charged. The cells are not balanced.

In some lead acid chargers. When in flotation. If the load current exceeds the setting of the charger. re-loading the bulk phase.

I am modifying the charger. I have to try if it works well.

It's a different end of charge charging profile so it will work with the bms's needs to balance. It like taking off your monster boots and putting on your ballet slippers.

I've reviewed.

Regulated disconnected from the battery. For 16S Lifepo4. 59V. Adjustable minimum voltage.

Start charging 52,2V. End charging 59V.

Later. I will use it for li-ion 67.2V 16S.

Does it drop ampage at 54-55 volt ? Does turn back on for bms balancing ? I had a kingpan Ping 48v 58.8v charger. I turned to up to 72v worked for two months the blew yhe 63v caps. I replaced with 100v caps and turned it up to 82volts. Only used it for testing hoping to be a travel charger. Very impressed with kingpan as 7 yrs old.

ampage. I do not get it. ¿Amperage?

Arriving at 54-55V. to blow past 59V. Arriving at 59V amperage to fallen gradually.

Kingspan have two chargers pingbattery. 48V 58.7V and 59V. With 63V capacitors. Prove fair to 67.2V. and it works well. ajute it again 59V. For use in 48V battery.

sold here 63V capacitors. No of 80-100V. to change them.
Is it a good buy 100V 1000uF capacitors on aliexpress?
