I'm going to add a blurb in my FAQ regarding using the self-learning jumper than many controllers are equipped with. This is limited to controllers with a jumper, and not programmable controllers that have a self-learning function as part of their firmware setup.
There are a few common variations for using the self-leaning function. Here are the ones I'm aware of, that start the same, but vary in subsequent steps:

- connect the jumper > power up the controller > observe whether the motor spins in the correct direction
- If the motor spins the correct direction
- unplug the jumper > finished or
- unplug the jumper > power down the controller > power back up > finished
- If the motor does not spin in the correct direction
- unplug the jumper > plug in the jumper > if the motor spins the correct direction > see above
- twist the throttle to reverse direction > if the motor spins the correct direction > see above
