Light connectors mismatched

I'm trying to install the lights to my new controller. My old controller had two different two of the sm2y connectors coming out. Each of the connectors had a black and red wire. This new controller there are two sm2y connectors but only red goes into one and only black goes into another. The controllers manufacturer seems to have done this intentionally and even had it out like that in the limited documentation which came with it. I'm wondering if I'm missing something here. How should I connect my lights to this new controller?

Have you checked for voltage at the red and black? It appears someone may have had a bad day, or first day on the job, at the controller print making factory. Or maybe that controller was meant for a particular destiny. I feel like there should’ve been a single SM connector, instead of 2 (each with a lone wire).

If you see proper voltage across the red and black, you can unpin the black and insert is into the SM connector with the red. Pretty easy to unpin the female end. You just need to depress the little tab, then (gently) pull the wire from the housing.

Thanks for asking the voltage question, the voltage is actually 40v I think my previous controller was outputing 6v to the lights, any suggests on how to deal with it
 
The only way I know (there may be other ways) of is to introduce a buck converter. I like ones with an isolated ground. They usually have 2 black GRD wires. A 36v to 5v may be fine. Or get new lights that can work on that 40v.

Sounds like a 36v battery. Very low if 48v battery. Some lights are "multi-voltage", so they MAY work on 40v. If not, then you blow them and risk other equipment being damaged. So that's a hard gamble to wadger. Do you have documentation on the lights?
