Giant DH comp (kiwi's dropouts)

having looked at these its not a typical solution (i.e. the bike doesn't come with removable dropouts)
but it is an awesome one.
Perhaps there are other frames to which this design idea could be applied.

Kona Stab Primo
Doc007 awesome one off dropouts machined here

Wanted to start a thread using the power of the forum and web to find all possibilities for custom dropouts like KIWI's. Much of the time the exact 2nd hand frame you desire is not available locally or for reasonable postage so if you had a list of possibly frames then your options would be greater. Please help me increase this thread with photos and technical drawings if possible thanks.

Ran out of attachment spaces in the first post so I'm continuing the list with this one. 8)

Zumbi 4XR

DMR frames (Exalt, Trailstar, Sidekick)
SwopOut dropout (hardtail, trial jump bikes)

Salsa (both frames no longer produced according to their site)
El Kaboing

Thanks Wally,
I'm flattered to be included in such good company. The URL to my build seems messed up, so here's the link: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=37207

Sadly my build completely stalled once I got the bike together as a pedal powered (beast). I hope to bring the bike into the Electric Age this fall/winter!

Also - and I know there are a bunch of A-Liners out there - but my personal tipping point on deciding to go with this frame was when I read Oatnet's ??????? vs x5403 - Fight! build(s)

Thanks,
Matt

Yeah Matt you among quite a hall of fame. I think norco bike are much overlooked since they are often ovebuilt but cheap to buy second hand. Perfect for a mid priced high power ebike. Just the torque plate problem and battery mounting to solve though I really like the idea of pelican boxes on the front forks.

Separating frames from dropouts – if one could mix and match, there were a few frames that I would enjoy mounting equipment and testing. However not one dropout meets the criteria I am looking for:

  • Bolt-on; +1 they all have that (natch).
  • Horizontal axle containment; only Blackmarket Killswitch.
  • Mechanical Axle alignment; two, maybe three, but they were fixed by manual slip and secured by tightening down screws. What I desire is a sockethead screw to offset the mounting block in and out, and that block can be fastened in place; the closest to that design is the 2012 GT Xizang 9'r titanium 29er. Just imagine how motorcycle axles are aligned and contained. This would prevent the axle from vertically shifting in the slot over more severe terrain.
Motorcycle examples below:

Chain Adjusters/ Rear Axle Blocks

TTLRG-SS0033BK.jpg

R&G Rear Axle Sliders / Protectors - Triumph Tiger 800 & 800XC 11-up

On my present ebike, in addition to having a torque arm on each side, they are also strapped down with a hose clamp to inhibit or reduce as much as possible any vertical movement which leads to wheel misalignment, and rubbing.

At least with bolt-ons, we have the freedom to develop our own designs. Should I purchase another DH/FS frame, I will certainly consider the bolt-on as a must-have item. :)

Thank you for listing. May it grow and grow with choices!

it should be pointed out too, that removable dropouts arn't just for the hub crowd... I'm making new dropouts for the norko to make space for a motor to be mounted to the rear swingarm, just in front of the tyre.

Well let my build be a bit of a warning to ya... 21" rims and 3" tires made the 3" I gained from custom dropouts all but disappear! So, go for longer dropout extensions and maybe 20" (20" motorcycle, not 20" bike/406mm) or 19" rims. Smaller than 19", the a-line will sit too low...

But you know all this I'm sure, especially since you hand-fabricated your dropouts!

Saw this on the golden motor site. Posted entirely from my phone using photo bucket so sorry for not cropping it properly. The bike builder is based somewhere in the uk. Be interesting if he is on here.

A few of the 2006-2007 Mongoose frames. The Black Diamond series and the EC-D for sure has removable dropouts. I think any Mongoose with the Maxle option should have removable dropouts. They also have two different width options. The standard dropouts are 130mm and the Maxle dropouts are 150mm.

They worked great for me. Here's my bike.

unfortunately not got a link to a build thread or if a page for it exists. don't know if Graham Crossley frequents here either but the marin quakes look like easy dropouts to fabricate for the DIY with limited tools. thanks for post the mongoose above. exactly the kind of post this thread needs.

awesome find GCinDC. If you do a custom clamping design for the removable dropouts on the CNC i will be very interested since i can run my scott ransom any higher power than it does now without risking a wee failure.

Great thread, I think I started a similar one somewhere, but your list is way more comprehensive than mine was.

Thanks oatnet , love your vectrix thread and norco Aline thread. The two great things about bike with removable dropouts is you don't have to ruin the frame to have higher power hubs and you can take your bike. Back to non electric when required.
If you find your thread a cross link would be great.

i don't know the seller its just so i can keep my search going.

also i saw a trek session earlier with removables via two bolts each side.

I'm trying the Trek Session 10 this spring time.
Bolt on dropouts, wide variable geometry, 10" travel with 10 1/2" shock.

Ohh I like that frame...

I would suppose that these aftermarket hangers/drop-outs would not be strong enough for most set-ups here, but what about a low-powered motor, around 1kW?

http://www.myshopping.com.au/PT--301_Bike_Accessories_GT_Bicycle_Hangers__fs_48290_56366_e__

Specificly, I have a 2007 GT Idrive 5.30 that I would like to mount an Ezee 400 W geared motor on. Controller would be an Infineon 25A from Ebikes CA.

Although some of the available pieces claim to be CNC'ed out of 6061, these appear to be cast. Could they be stronger than the O.E.M. pieces?

The advantage of bolt-on dropouts is that we can just copy the original in steel.
Copy the swing arm mounts, the IS brake mount, then shape a through axle mount to match your motor, or make 10mm pinch dropouts so you can swap any motor. Another advantage of bolt-on dropouts is that is makes it easy to change the rear geometry to use a different wheel size.
