Hi ES!

After having a lot of fun on pendragon8000's creations, and recieving a lot of encouragement and inspiration from the man himself, I decided it is time to try my hand at building one for myself. Being a short arse and favouring smaller bikes in general I found the perfect catch about 2 weeks after deciding to build.

Behold, the Eastern Griffin:

So. What's the plan?

Basically, the plan is to turn this stock standard BMX into a safe, fast, high powered and good looking eBMX. The build will include features such as:
  • rear hub motor
  • front disc brakes
  • cool looking custom wheels
  • custom aluminium battery box
  • controller
  • throttle
  • led lights for safety
  • torque arm
  • suspension to save my arse
oh, and a truck horn...

Phase 1: Horn, LED's, Battery Box --> Phase 2: Wheels, Batteries, Controller/Throttle --> Phase 3: Everything Else --> Phase 4: WIN

I am currently in Phase 1.
Horn is on, LED's are being built. Battery Box is under construction.

The Work So Far

Bike Phase 1.jpg

This is a work in process and I am here to learn as I go along the journey with pendragon's help.

Please note, this OP is a work in process. Any errors and details and omissions will be edited over time until it is the perfect OP.

Little bits and pieces

Safety First! The first thing I have added is a horn. I went a bit overboard and purchased this as I was so keen to start my build.

Here it is on my bike as it stands now, wobbles and everything:

Horn Phase 1.jpg

We have connected it to a nice button, and a Turnigy 5000mAh 6S 40C Lipo Pack. I am going to use 6 Batteries in total for the finished project, but one at a time due to finance.

The next piece to be built is the front LED. After a bit of thought as to what would look best and be most effective, I decided a long LED column running along the handle bars.

We got these fat 2.4" tyres on the way. Straight black . not white wall.
On Chops behalf:
Goal is:
18s of 5ah 6s 40c x6 for 10amp
Lyen 18fet 4110 programmed to 80amps
Ca v3 for thermal roll back, efficient mode etc.
Hs3540 with drilled side plates and super beefy upgraded axle from Tench (axle nut is 3/4" or 19mm and flats are 14mm for bmx dropout.)
We've got 16mm steel for the clamping torque arms.
1mm aluminum sheet for battery box.
Were aiming for a super clean tidy build. And using a remote motorcycle alarm to turn it on and off (soft) , actual disconnect through a beefy plug.

Id like to put cable glands on the controller and mount 8mm plugs in them so no plugs on the chainstay .
900watt bulk charger from bmsbattery, cos its big but not too big for a back pack.
Alex dx32 rims 38mm wide.
Laced on a MTBfront disc hub, we need to weld an IS disc mount to the fork to mount the Clark's hydrolic 203mm disc brake.
Motor will be laced with Justin's advice using zero cross paired spoke holes. So drilling spoke holes 13mm from existing ones gives a 80° spoke angle at the rim. Avoiding the issue of radial spokes breaking due to no tangential angle to transfer torque and also its actually possible to lace without going insane due to single cross being vertually impossible with such short spokes.

Think that's it for now.
Were looking at seat post suspension to.
Oh yeah and PEDELABLE lol

this is going to be freaky 70vx80amps?

Even with paired holes I wish you luck = that is insane torque!

Lack of suspension for those speeds is a bit of a worry, get a full face helmet and back pack with proper back protection.

can't wait to see you and Pendragon do your first video after a pub session :)

Haha indeed.

We got the lights sorted out yesterday . its pretty much like a spotlight on wheels at this stage. The rear light is cool.
2 x 5mm red LEDs super bright 25 000 MCD I think just coming out of under the seataim down slightly lighting up the ground behind with 2 large ovals of red. although they are aimed down they are still highly visible.

I hoped to start on the battery box today but Chop needed a rest so I re wired the Scott motor.
Plenty of photos to come.

wheres the motor? nice lights

It's still coming! It's a slow build, won't be ready until about 2 months from now, unless I win the lottery!

I'm pretty proud of the rear lights. It's nice and tidy and the wires are going into the seat post and down and then out into the battery box. Used a lot of grommets.

Yeah Pen had a bad stack of his little free agent, bumrar.

Doing tricks and wheelies in the skate park.

Managed to pull himself home though, hopefully I see him tomorrow!

Safety is gonna have to be a must with this thing.
