I've been posting quite a few "noob" questions lately but I've really been making good progress with my e-longboard. Anyways, I was wondering if there were alternatives to the 5mm htd belts that everyone uses. I've been shopping around and no one seems to have a 57t 9mm or 15mm belt in stock (I don't this this will work: http://www.vbeltsupply.com/285-5m-09-synchronous-timing-belt.html), so I've been looking into alternatives because I'm impatient. Is there a reason no one uses regular v-belts, chains, or gears? I would think that chains, although noisy and not water resistant would be less maintenance than breakable belts. V-belts could slip I guess, but they seem much more durable. Was also wondering if anyone has experience with the htd 3mm belts.

With my 245kv motor, 70mm wheels, and 6s pack I was looking at a 19t to 36t (.528) ratio. With 85% load that is theoretically 20 mph. Is that a good target for mostly flat pavement? Should I go to 18t if I want to tackle bigger hills?

Another thing on my mind is front wheel drive vs. rear wheel drive. The one-motor setups I see all have rwd as far as I can see. I feel like fwd would protect the motor a bit more.

As far as motor mounts go, would I be alright with 1/4" aluminum or should I go for 3/8". I'm designing a kind of clamp on mount so I was leaning towards the 3/8" plate so that a bigger screw could be tapped in.

I know this is quite a bit to answer but any feedback is truly helpful, thanks!

It is possible to use v-belts, but does not provide the physical characteristics belts with teeth and chains in terms of handling torque. Using belts is quieter and needs no grease as opposed to chains, but in terms of longevity chains can out last belt. Straight cut gears can be done and will work, but I don't know how long it will last. FWD vs RWD, merely preference. A motor mount minimum thickness of 10mm is good enough. 3/8" is a good thickness to start and close to 10mm in thickness as I have done a single piece motor bracket to my Caliber trucks since Im all about less moving parts and a simple design.

Hmm... After some more shopping around I can't seem to find an appropriate pulley with a 8mm bore in anything but 5mm htd. Does anyone know of other sources of belts? I posted this already but I think this belt is correct, just not rated for high tension. Am I correct?

5mm htd is perfectly not sure why you would have doubts when its simply the norm.

works great.

i have my own belts fairly tight and if you want more durable move up to 15mm width.

htd 3mm it you need more reduction but get 15mm width

I don't doubt them, I just can't find them in stock anywhere.

Also any feedback for my proposed drive ratio?
