Lots of Noise.

I rode to work today on my new E-Snare, and boy did I get a wake up call after about 30mins on the road. Once I hit the city, and ran over the bumpy city streets, I started hearing noise that initially got me concerned. Just bike noise, not motor noise. All kinds of squeeking and pinging.

At first, I thought I was breaking a bunch of nipples again, like I did with my old bike. However, I built this new wheel with alot less tension in the spokes. After checking the spokes upon arrival at work, I noticed, nothing appears to have popped loose. So, what the heck is making all this rolling noise?

It then dawned on me. Other than the chain, I hadn't lubed anything on this full suspension bike since I bought it. All the rear suspension joints use those poly bushings (which we all know tend to squeek). So, after getting to work I started flooding all joints with PTFE lube, including the spoke nipples at the rim. Only time will tell on my way home tomorrow if it actually queited things down.

Other than that, I got to work with no serious mishaps.

Who else has had serious noise to deal with?

Some of it could be spoke noise, My wheels sometimes talk a little to me. Pinging noises. If they talk too much I know there are some loose spokes. Suspension too, I find my bike does a lot of squeaking on the rear shock in cold weather.

I just HATE that feeling.

My '63 Legnano and her Campy group require me to shift by ear, so any little squeak gets hunted down pronto.

The eTek Moby has too much belt, chain and brush noise to let me worry about anything.

But I keep listening anyway!

Track the rattles down, you'll be glad you did...

I vote it's the spokes, too. I like mine good and tight.

On the suspension bushings. I found that the one for the spring shock was to tight and was squeeking. I backed off a hair and hit it with some lube and it stopped. The weird think im having is when im cornering hard you can hear and or feel the read disk scrubbing. It might just need a little more adjusting but other than that my snare has been good. I still got a gremlin in my rear shifter it sounds like it wants to change but never does I tried adjusting it. It just shifts to a nother gear pair. Sometimes on the high sometimes on the low sometimes it jumps off and gets jammed. Hell i never get out of top gear anyway .

I hear ya bud. With a 5303 and a 50amp kelly rgen controller, I wish I had a 53-11 setup. As is, I gotta settle for the 52-13.

I just got done dripping some teflo lube on all hinge points, and all spokes. I checked the spokes by just a quick squeeze, and they seem tight enough. I don't have my spoke wrench to get a better feel, but I'll check it when I get home.

Anyway, I rode it around at work, and it seems very quiet now. The rear rack is a little jiggly, but I can stiffen it up more when I get home by adding some JB-Weld to the rack sleeve over the main rack support beam. The rack is a permanent setup, so it'll never get adjusted again anyway. Man, I love JB-Weld.

Even when my spokes are tensioned right, I still get a little bit of talking out of them, usually on a hard lean corner. If they talk too much when putting on throttle and your are not cornering, that might be a bit loose.
