MAC Motor disassembly pictures/video?

I can't seem to find disassembly pictures or video for the MAC hub motor. Anyone have a link? The search is hard to use, especially for thee letter words like MAC. I found a nice vid for the BMC, but BMC only has one side cover, so not sure if it is entirely the same.

Thanks for the link, now to deal with the one stripped Phillips screw i just created.

Perhaps use a dremel to make a deep groove in the screw-head, and then use an impact-driver?

Thanks, I got it all apart. I found a bunch of washers inside along with my stripped gears. The washers were lose and most were wedged between the large metal gear and the side cover. Is someone sabotaging these in the factory, or did a part explode leaving the washers behind? This motor is/was basically brand new. Only been using it for 1 or 2 weeks of commute.

The washers look like maybe they were used as a spacer to keep the large gear ring 1mm from the side cover?

em3ev has confirmed that the washers are used to hold the gears in place. They have kindly sent me a new set of gears!

That seems like a lot of washers to just hold down the gears.

1 on ach gear, maybe. I don't remember seeing that many, and I rebuilt one in the spring with the new clutch and gears.

Make sure you clean all the shads from the gears and washers.
Might even use some clay to clean the pieces up. Then make sure that the sun and ring gears don't have smashed pieces stuck in them. If they do, it will do it all over again.

Yeah, I would have guessed three washers for three gears. Looks like all three circlips failed...odd.

I pulled the clutch up and all 3 plastic gears just fell off, bearings are still clipped on the clutch with the circlips. I found 8 washers, and some pieces of metal are embedded in the nylon gears. They look the same as your bottom clutch, but there is no big black washer, just 3 holes in each gear, looks like there might be parts missing? Also can't find they keyway chunk of metal, maybe it got embed in the gears also.

Here is a pic after i used the gear puller. I guess the gears are on upside down when compared to the picture above as they have a round indent on the other side.

I have a question that I think you answered earlier. How old and when did yu get that Mac?

What I see is new style gears on ald old style clutch.

I have old and new clutches and gears not installed.

When I ordered the new clutch I needed to order the new gears as I was told the new gears won't fit the old clutch or vice a versa, I don't remember which.

After looking at the new gears it apears the washers are from the gearsthat go under the screws that hold the bearings in.

I MIGHT BE ALL WET, but look.

ALSO BE SURE TO CHECK THE MOTOR SIDE FOR METAL SHAVINGS ON THE MAGNETS.

MAC was shipped March 19th 2013. Yes, I did find some screws completely embedded in the nylon gears, so i guess it just needs screws and small washers?. Wonder if this new system is slightly less durable, or if i was just unlucky and hit a bump wrong, or was something assembled wrong?

On the new clutch the screws goes up or they will hit the clutch.

Thanks for all the pictures, now i see how the screws hold the gears in. I wonder if the new screw style gears are weaker? I noticed the 3 holes in the gears on mine all look worn and stretched. Maybe i got the motor too hot, and it caused the screw grip to weaken?

I think the gears were upside down and the screw heads caught the clutch face and ripped them out.

As I said I don't know if the new gears fit the old clutch.

Did you get the new gears yet. If so try them screw down and see if they will hit. They might go screws up, they do on the new clutch.

Heat would not tear the screws out, maybe melt the gears but not likely. If you get it hot enough to melt the gears it will destroy the halls first.

Sorry i didn't take any pictures of gear replacement. I got the new gears and installed them with the screw heads facing the clutch. Seems to be working OK. I did not use any washers anywhere, tossed out all the mangled washers. Took it out about five times now without any problems so far.

Don't buy Canadian tire snap ring pliers for this, they really suck, and don't quite go small enough for the small snap-rings.
