Mac, Triangle A123, Giant Hardtail Commuter - 1st build

Hi striped tuna,
Love your bike. I have just bought a mac 8t, 12 fet & cycle analyst from cellman also and agree totally that it is a really good setup. I couldn't stretch to one of his batteries but I have a 16s headway 10ah battery and so far its doing real good. I changed my settings in the controller whilst waiting for a decent enough time to fit it all to my bike and wish I didn't as I couldn't find out with the software supplied how it was set up. I dont suppose you have an .asv file for the standard settings that you could send over to me? I have emailed Paul but as you will no doubt be aware he will be very busy and hasn't got back to me yet. I now have the rated current set at 20 amps & the phase current set at 50 amps. Cyle analyst is showing peak amps at 35 amps but I tend to keep it between 15 & 25 amps which is probably the most I want to be pulling from my headways. ( i did try it at 30 amps rated & 80 amps phase and it went like the clappers with cycle analyst showing 56 amp peak current :) , but the battery got a bit warm ) Anyway keep up with documenting you build. Regards Rob

Hi Rob,

wish I could help ya mate. But I (stupidly) buried the programming cable plug under all those layers of tape and rubber underneath. I got so carried away with taping up my excess cable, that I forgot to leave the programming plug out. There is that much tape, that i figured i will get to that plug the next time something goes wrong and i need to undo everything to fault find. I am not sure when i will get around to it. My controller is fresh in that I havent hooked it up to a computer, and thus I havent got an asv file with all the factory settings off it yet.. I don't even know how to program it.. Can you hook it up to a coputer and actually make a backup of the settings??

Your best bet would be to email Cell_man again or even PM him.. I know he is often flat out, but he does seem to always sort his customers out. The other person I would ask is Neptronix. (hope i spelt that right).. he seems to really know his stuff when it comes to the Macs too.. So he might well have the factory settings that you are after too.. or at least advise you of good settings that will keep you happy..

Sorry i couldnt be more help at this stage..

I ride the bike using only the 2nd speed.. and generally am on less than 1000W except for short bursts. My CA has a 30A limit set on it, and the 3 speed switch seems to limit 1st to 30km/h, 2nd to 40, and third goes to top speed of over 50km/h.. Good luck with finding the settings.. I am sure Cell_man will get back to you with the info, or hopefully someone reading this thread can help..

Cheers,

Ed.

Hi Ed,
No problem but I dont think you can save what is already loaded onto the controller as I had a look for this option. I couldn't even see what was on it. I will wait until Paul gets back to me as I know he is busy anyway. The settings I have on at the minute are pretty good anyway as I am scared of beating the life out of my headway cells. Now if I had that A123 battery that you had I would have it always on 40a as the acceleration is great, far better than I expected :) keep up the good work! rob

Hi

Super nice build, i have been running these motors for 6 + years now and they are great as long as you obey a few rules, always peddle a little bit and try and avoid hard starts from standing still, gentle use of the throttle at low RPMS (you will hear the motor sort of grumble at you if you dont) keep the volts at no more than 52 and the amps no more than 40 and you should be fine, I have a number of different motors and they are all fine apart from the couple that I abused that broke badly  play nice with the motor and it will last you a long time, I love mine :D Have fun and well done on the build, loving the frame bag very nice.

Thanks heaps for that Susan and Knoxie..

Cheers also for the sound advice. I like to pedal, and accelerate with trying to keep under 1000 watts. ie. gradually. In my opinion, the bike is an absolute beast of a commuter. I hated riding into head winds before, and later in the week the slight up hill coming home used to annoy me. The slight down hill of my commute was like heaven. Now my whole commute is like heaven, even riding into a head wind.. I also ran out of battery on the way to work the other day.. The Mac freewheel was perfect. I rode home the whole way with no motor assist, and it really was not that much harder than my original bike. A bit slower due to lower gearing but certainly not any harder.. So the setup impressed me even without using the motor.. Lastly i noticed that there was a power point on the wall right next to the bike racks at work (secure car park) .. Oh mann. I now want a small trickle (say 2A) charger permanently attached to my bike..

I still have some finishing touches, winter lights, and a mirror to fit.. Will keep posting pics, but my videos were too shaky.. Might try the handle bar mount next..

Cheers,

Ed.

Great stuff ed! yes you have to watch the gears when starting off so it always helps to peddle and not just rely on the motor also on really steep hills always peddle with it, yeah charging at work is ideal if you can do it, my commute is so short its never a problem but its uphill on the way home and very often the wind is in my face, I love it being on my electric bike, after a hard day at work your not dreading the cycle back you look forward to it.

Beautiful work, nicely done! I especially like how the battery bag fits that frame so well. If you get itchy to buy more accessories for your bike, you might consider a $140 Thudbuster seat-post. Yes, they are pricey, but they are worth it on a hardtail bike. And...you may want to consider some anti-theft planning?...

Hey ed, looking through your threads however wasn't sure of the answer.
- Did you end up getting the 9xmosfet controller or the 12xmosfet controller (then limited to 30A by the CA)?

If you are on a 52V battery - aren't you effectively running 1.5kW @30A?

Its an 8T motor with the upgraded phase wires (two wires per phase). 12 Fet controller, and cell_man's 52V triangle battery.

I havent played much on the bike recently, but from memory (and i really could be wrong about this and wont know till i take it out for a spin) the current draw is limited not only by the max limit set by the CA, but also limited by the controller when I use the 3 speed switch and lastly by the throttle position.

SO when I said that I only use the 2nd speed and am generally on less than 1000w, i meant that when i am using the 2nd speed, and i was riding to work with the throttle set at a comfortable riding speed for me, the CA would rarely show a power usage of over 1000w.

If i was using the 3rd (fastest) speed switch setting and had my throttle to full, it would be using higher and should be around 1.5kw. I cant remember what the power usage exactly was though in that situation. I really need to get back out on the bike or sell it...
