Basically, how would you go about adding pedals to some engineless dirtbike or streetbike?

My thought is to add the extra wide cranks:

I would think it would be best to add a jackshaft with a freewheel, then drive the jackshaft with the electric motor, also. Anybody feel they have a better way?

Sorry, but I have to ask,...why?

Oh, nothing to apologize for, it's obvious we have different ideas about what would be neat. With pedals it's a bicycle, no reg, etc. I just love the idea of a big thunder bicycle, even without a motor. There is a moped engine kit with built in pedals, if I wanted a regular moped I could pop that on. And since I'm not really a gas hater, I could do that too if I could get enough such gliders.

If I go buy that frame I get half of it back selling the tank and exhaust. Only problem is it doesn't have the lights, signals, etc.

I think I've seen Crazyhorse in here. If he sees me posting this he'll be oh so encouraging.

Find the lightest motorcycle you can. The biggest problem with emotos is the weight. It leads to a bigger motor and more batteries with the end result still being lower performance than is easily possible starting with a bike. Have you seen AtomicZombie.com. Some of those are quite moto looking without the weight.

In my state at least, there is no weight limit on a moped. But there is a 50cc limit. The way the law is written, there is no specific horsepower limit but if a judge were to have to decide it, likely he'd say 3 hp or 5 hp.

So in my state, a cheap china 150cc dirtbike, with pedals and an electric motor added, could theoretically be legal as a moped and still run 4000w or so. Tempting, very tempting, especially since there is no requirement for plates or vins here. 30mph speed limit is about all there is to worry about here, and having a valid drivers licence. Nice dirt perfromance and street legal too.

Instead I just built a regular bicycle, with 25 mph speed and 3000w. Close enough for me. And fully legal here. Waaaay lighter, so fun to ride.
