my new full carbon 28lb 27 speed ebike racer

Wish Clyte or someone would make a hub motor in a wheel like that so I wouldn't have to worry about popping spokes anymore.

Sweet build!

Nice bike :D Your seat angle looks   though.

With a quill stem and downtube shifters, the frameset must be a fair few years old now, is it actually full carbon even in the headtube, bottom bracket area?

Tell us about the brand and performance your getting from the electric system: speeds, distance? Is it a Cyclone or eLation? Is it loud?

Looks like a very clean installation 8) You'd barely even notice it from the left hand side of the bike.

oooooh sweet build 8)
whats the specs on it for power etc?

Cheers,

D

Beautiful bike

NEED Details!!!

dammit Zilla,

don't post abeauty like this and then leave us hanging for the details man!!!!

Cheers,

D

lol, ok i'll get on it

cheers,

ok heres the spec

power 700w continuous 1000w plus peak
modified elation/cyclone/lipo/lipo4 33.3v 700w plus bottom bracket drive cyclone 500w motor on 33.3volts with elation crank etc
freewheels on rear wheel motor and pedals so it is just like a very fast road bike without electric assist

kestral sti200 carbon road race frame and forks with durace /ultegra/xtr components
flat bars with clip on time trail superman bars since pics have installed stem converter and 40 degree drop stem so bars are now a couple of inches lower and further forward for more aero riding position
27 speed was 30 speed but 9 speed rear gives wider gearing options
53t 11t top gear(really high)
30t 35t bottom gear(really low)
140psi tyre pressure
hed carbon disk rear wheel(rear trispoke on bike when pics taken i think it looks way better with the disk)
hed trispoke carbon front wheel
race face titanium bb
some ceramic bearings
carbon seat, seat post,bars etc

weight 28 pounds/14.7kg!with short range battery pack add about 1kg for long range pack(long range pack shown)
short range pack hidden in under seat mounted tube bag conected with wires shown on upper downtube far more stealth look with short range pack

it rides very well is stable ,corners like the racing bike it is(the low central mass of the engine may even help with cornering) and as carbon fiber flexes it soaks up the bumps almost like it has suspention

performance

the only ebikes i can compare it to is a ezip trails i own and a avanti electra i only road once
the ezip has better performance than the electra
my girlfriend who is fitter than me(she is 22 im 39) rides the ezip when we bike together with the more areo riding position, less weight, rolling resitance, bearing drag but manly because a road race bike is just faster the performance is very close to the ezip.....if i dont turn on the power switch,it is not often i turn the power on when riding with her because its not a strain to keep up even if she is thrashing the ezip
the ezip does have the edge on hills though if im unpowered

with the power on im very pleased with the performance but dont know how it would compare to the monster power big hub bikes some of you guys have
top speed without pedaling is a gps confirmed 53kph(just over 30mph)with very little wind, because it is for a conventional bike quite aero pedaling helps speed quite a bit

with its low gearing it will climb any hill without pedaling!!(i live in dunedin, new zealand it extremely hilly,we have the worlds steepest street,my driveway is steeper and it goes up both no problems in fact keeping the front wheel down is the biggest hill climbing issue)

it will go to work and back about 10km on the short range pack 33.3v 2.2 ah including a short 1km but very very very steep section at full throttle all the way with pedaling

at lower speeds it seems to be very easy on its battery
if i back the speed down to about 40kph and pedal a bit its on about one third throttle the main pack is 10 ah and im yet to need to go far enough to use it all im considering taking it off permanently as i doubt i need the range it provides

pics of its lattest spec to follow

Hi Zilla

Looks like real nice project.

Quote "modified elation/cyclone/lipo/lipo4 33.3v 700w plus bottom bracket drive cyclone 500w motor on 33.3volts with elation crank etc..."

I am just a bit dissapointed your have "muddied the water" on what your electric system make is, since a I put a lot of work into the design :)

Technically the system in use is a full eLation V2 System. SInce we do have a 500W version, just we have sales of it on hold while we do a few battery tweaks. The only 'change' I appear to see is that you have overvolted the system to 33V, beyond that, the ride is pure eLation  . Are you going to put the eLation stickers on to give me some advertising :) :)

Just an update, I have finally convinced the motor supplier to design a 36V motor, instead of having a need to overvolt. Having said that, knowing you guys you will just overvolt it to +40V :)

I get the sample early next month for tests, so getting excited. Next change on the horizon is battery philosophy. Looking at a XP12S battery pack that will montior/protect individual parallel cells. So in theory if a single cell goes UV or SC it will be isolated from the circuit, allowing the remiening parallel cells to carry load.

Also big revamp coming up for crank system. Timeline for all this is 1st qtr next year.

PS. I note the idler arm is not in use. You may want to look at the website, front page, the idler is now changed and MUCH better. If you want this one contact me offline with postage details and I will send to you.

hi allan

as i said its an elation crank system with a cyclone motor overvolted to 33.3 volts
im pretty sure after changing the motor for a (out of a cyclone kit) larger one and then bulding a higher voltage battery pack most people would call this modifed
if the 500w motor was avalible from you(i asked then almost begged to buy a 500w version and was told it is not avalible yet )it would have saved me alot of expense and trouble ditto with a higher voltage version

i would love to put the elation stickers on the bike but to save confusion and the enevinitable request from cyclone for their stickers to be displayed i suggest you send me one of your higher wattage motors with out delay...a higher voltage battery supplied by you would also,as you would appreciate add to the elation stickers authenticity
as there were no stickers included with my kit you may also wish to send some of them

i will contact you to take you up on your kind offer for the improved idler and also your earlier offer for the improved/non powersaving throttle
this offer shows you stand by your product good on ya mate :)

Zilla,

VERY nice build! I absolutely LOVE it! I have always wondered why more people do not convert road bikes. They seem a good choice considering their efficiency and light weight.

Allan,

I will try to say this kindly...........

To the rest of us here (or at least to me), your post seems like an attempt for some free advertising and (forgive me if this sounds harsh) it sure sounds rude to me. At best it is thread hijacking. I am glad Zilla cleared the air on what the deal is.

Matt

Hi Zilla,

i always think that stickers advertising must be waranted by either a) some extrememly good customer service, b) some free parts :), c) some input/help/support with the build.
I think allan may or may not deserve a nod on the bike but like matt sais i dont think he should berate you for not doing so in your own thread which isn't about the kit at all, but the conversion of the bike itself.

meh, just my 2 cents he's probably a real nice fella, only you know and only you decide!!

Cheers,

D

Hi Zilla

I apologise for what has clearly been misintrepted as a "highjack attmept". It appears if you have a fincaical stake in this forum, your opinion is less valued.

I dont expect forums guys to visit my site or to keep abreast of changes. So when I saw this I added "an opinion" and then offered FREE upgrades. I only ever offer these toforum members.

After this I assure you I will remain a rock spider and just lurk. Sadly with that goes any FREE upgrades or notifications of improvements.

Apologies to all, and all please keep up your good work.

PS. The offer for free upgrades to you still stand, and to those who have also contacted me off line overnight. Sorry to the rest.

Awww i feel bad now.
and Allan has such a cute pic too. I didn't mean you any offence Allan, as you said i probably did misconstrue your mail but it did come across as if you were bullying zilla a little.
Sorry for my comment.

Cheers,

D

And so, after the flame wars... back to the topic!
Zilla, you hit the nail on the head: We don't want electric Hummers we want lightweight electric bikes. Two things interest me:
1) Some stats (watt-hours per km)
2) Engineering detail of how you fitted the Cyclone/Elation -- err.. sorry ... motor.
We'd all be interested in that so we can copy, I think
Cheers,
Paul

I am curious about your efficiency too. This is one of the best builds (cleanest for sure), I have ever seen.

Can you post some close-up pics of the motor mount?

Anyway, VERY pretty bike!

Matt

P.S. I will return your PM with in-depth answers later today.

allan
im sorry this has worked out so badly
i in no way wanted the other posters to jump on you in the way they have
you deciding not to post anymore is not good for everyone as you are very very clever with ebikes and i would like you to reconsider

i answered your post in light hearted jesting manor (feel free to send the high powered motor if you want though :) )because your post was i think with all the smiley faces meant in a friendly and similar vein
i am thinking long and hard before replying on the tread as i do not want to make any rash comments and remind everyone that you did not more than offer your opinion
as requested i will not post any pictures of your mounting system on any public forum on this site or others without your permission

just to be clear

MY SYSTEM IS AN ELATION BOTTOM BRACKET AND MOTOR MOUNT WITH A CYCLONE 500W MOTOR CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE FROM ELATION AND 2 CUSTOM BATTERY PACKS ONE OF WITCH IS IN A ELATION SUPPLYED BATTERY HOUSING

i described the system as a elation/cyclone/etc /etc not a cyclone/elation/... i think this is a fair description as i found it impossible even after asking and asking to purchase the setup on the bike from your nz agent and your website describes the 500w kit as on advanced notice and not yet avalible remember also i have well over 1000w of available power with this setup

i was not trying to have a discussion about elation vs cyclone kits

i was trying to have a disscution about

a) my shinny new replacement bike
b)how porn trispoke wheels look
c)that of course carbon is strong enough for an ebike
d)that road bikes use less power go further and faster for x amount of battery
e)that i have a 22year old girl friend

on with the disscution

matt/paul

i do not know how to calculate watt hours if you teach me how i would be happy to post the results
all i can say about efficiency is its less efficient than a recumbent and more than a mountain bike.....much more

allan has asked me not to post pics of the motor mount (its pure elation but there is a very good pic on the front page of his elation website.... )

Hi Zilla

Thanks very much for your post, I feel it is very genuine. I think there might be a bit more misunderstanding; please feel free to post any pictures you wish too.

All I asked was that fair credit be offered, and that goes for me too. Your bike is a bloody ripper and I am as jealous as the rest of guys/gals here.

I am proud of my product and that is the reason I did not want to sell 500W. I actually have in stock, but I was not happy to sell with standard pack as I felt the end user might feel let down. I make a good engineer, poor salesman. I wont deliberately sell what I would not like myself.

With regard to giving forum WHrs, plus other info I am also happy to throw in a CycleAnalyst (yes again at my cost), but only if you send me your address damn quick. I will go broke the way you are getting freebies :)

Then you will be able to post data for the BENEFIT of ALL.

Cheers
Allan

On Topic

I note you have used some "material" between the bike /motor mount plate. As you know that plate has grooved contours too allow for various tube shapes. It also has sharp edges running front to back that are intended to 'cut' into the frame outer (paint) layer to ensure better grip.

So my questions to you is:
1. Why did you palce it there? Was it to protect frame or some other reason?
2 Probably too early to tell but can you see if any slip may be occurring as that is my primary concern with ANY material between mount and frame.

If all looks Ok, and you think it is a worthwhile addition let me know what you used and I will add to kits.

Did it feel dicey clamping things to the carbon tube. I would be terrified to try it
When will you have some further operational data for speed and hill freaks.

Cheers
