I'm an avid reader for about a year now. Spend hours a day at it. (I really should get a job, huh?) I've enjoyed getting to know you guys and have learned a lot. Thanks. I do miss Xyster, though

I'm on my second 408 front motor kit. After about 4 months, I developed a hall sensor problem in the first motor. I bought a second kit from the same Ebay dealer-exchanged the wheel and have been fine for about another 4 or 5 months-except for having to replace the throttle once. Now I think I have another hall sensor problem. (I haven't gotten around to fixing the first motor yet.)

Anyway, here are the new symptoms. Motor was running kind of ok except for a very very brief (maybe a half second) hiccup about once every 200 yards or so, However, the speed would be ok a half throttle, but when you go to full throttle the motor actually slowed down. Runs about half as fast at full throttle as it did at half throttle. I hooked up the extra controller and I had the same symptoms--so I ruled out the controller as the problem.

I followed the troubleshooting guide, opened the controller and checked the throttle. At half throttle, I get 3.3 volts. At full throttle, I get 2.3 volts. So, I'm thinking its another throttle problem. Since I had the controller opened up, I checked the hall sensors. One of the 3 sensors checks out ok. It alternates between 0 and 12 volts as you spin the wheel. The other two sensors never got above 2 or 3 volts as you spin the wheel. Put the cover back on the controller and now the motor won't run unless you first give the wheel a spin first to get it started and then it runs for few seconds and stops. Sounds like another hall sensor problem, doesn't it? Do you guys think the throttle is also bad? Or is the throttle acting weird because of the bad hall sensors?

I'm thinking I should just buy a brushed controller and run it as Pedal First. If I do that will I need a different throttle or does the lighted Clyte thumb throttle work with both brushed and brushless controllers? (I'll probably also buy new hall sensors and try to replace the sensors in the extra motor just to see if I can do it--but I'm not too confident and think I'd better go with the brushed controller so I can get it running again quickly.)

What do you guys think. Hall sensors only or sensors and the throttle? Any other thoughts? Anybody got an unneeded brushed controller laying around that would work? (Am I the unluckiest fellow in the world to have 2 motors with hall sensor problems in about 8 months. )

Thanks for straigtening me out. Rather than a brushed controller, I should have said "sensorless brushless" controller. I'm still learning.

So, are you saying that both of my controllers have the same problem hence the symptoms are the same with both oif them? Do you think the hall sensors in the motor are also bad or are you saying it looks like just a problem with the controllers?

Your throttle behavior sounds weird. Don't rule out a wiring problem. Check the 5v supply on the throttle when its at full throttle and see if it sags.

The motor halls sound bad. Again, don't rule out a wiring problem between the motor and controller. Pinched wires can do that.

Fetchter, Thank you very much for taking the time to reply.

After confirming that the hall wires from the controller down to the motor connection are ok, I decided that I may as well get a "Pedal first" controller and just go ahead and get a new throttle while I'm at it. I'm a little leery of taking the motor apart and replacing the sensors. I'm afraid they'll get blown out again. Maybe "pedal first" will be a little less prone to problems.

The only place I've found on the Web that sells a crystalyte 36v "pedal first" controller is Ebikes.ca. Their website shows they only have one left. It was sursprising to me that every other ebike web outfit I found just lists the "immediate start" controllers and didn't show any "pedal first" ones for sale. I'll give Justin a call tommorrow and see if he still has that one.

Do you (or anybody) happen to know any other source or any other brand of "pedal first" controller maybe, that will work on a 408 motor? I still have the second 408 motor with the same problem. so I'll need to get a second "pedal first" controller at some point to fix up the second bike. (My son-in-law has pretty much taken over the first one as his sole transportation. Heck, I need one back for myself. Too much fun to miss out on)

Thanks again.
