Hello all,
Just got word from Mark, who wanted me to let you all know that the new puma's are on the way in.
Thees still one last "teething" problem, in that the spoke flanges are a little too centralized on the hub, so users with 26" wheels and tight frames may not be able to dish the rim enough. The only way around this (untill the next modified shipment arrives) is to use a single, or at most a threespeed freewheel.
Hopefully this wont be too much of a problem for most, since you cant really add much human power at top Puma speeds anyway.

Anyone knowing of a 3 speed or single speed freewheel with 11 or 12 teeth please let me know

Marks very sorry for all the delays/teething troubles, and is already working on fixing this for the next motor run!

Ciao,

Steve

yo steve!!!

sounds good, whats the full sp?
rears/fronts? 250/320rpm all 500W?
disk adapters?????

let us know the bobby moore as we need to know proper ;)

cheers

Hi m8 :D
He has rears and fronts, and the rears are now thinner than before (115mm instead of 135). A sleeve is used if you want to fit a bigger freewheel so you can space the hub into a 135mm dropout. This means that the rear motors could also be used in some bikes as front motors too.
I believe he ordered mainly 320 RPM, since he still has some 260rpm from the last batch, and it makes it alot easier not to have to go too high on batt voltage.
Disk adapters, well, I thinkl that was the idea behind the spacers, that you could use a smaller freewheel, and gain the space on the other side for disk caliper etc, but i'm not at all sure if therewill be enough space. Next time I talk to Mark I'll ask if he still has plans to make adapters foir the disk, but I think for the moment he is still planning another motor casing change to get over the dishisng problems. We hope he can change the casings for something like the older BMC/Puma's (the one with 6 holes ready to take a disk), since these worked out well for the disk brake.

That enough Bobby Moore for you? (Cockney slang is not my strong point, so I can only guess at what you meant:p) Let me know if you need to find out any more, I dont mind playing gobetween for the moment

Any idea of the price?

cheers joz,

looking forward to those motors arriving a lot, nothing like "seeing" them so hopefully we can get some pics up when they land - any eta on arrival?
yeh the fitting of my old skool puma was a doddle so hopefully with the spacer these will be ok too, my disk brake fitted so well on the last i wanted to weep ;)

Hey Y,

i haven't done a thing man, i've been totally gutting/rebuilding the bathroom and the bike along with everything else in the flat is now covered in a thick layer of plaster/building dust  i got my plasterer back in on sunday again (had workmen every weekend for 6 weeks now :( )and thats the last for 4 weeks before i get it tiled so hopefully i can get the bike cleaned/charged and get out testing the batts. i reckon they will be ok i just think the 39v charge batt dipped below lvc as i had been thrashing for 3ah, fingers crossed it will be fine once they are both fully charging at 41v as they did when i ran them by themselves, i cannot wait to get out there at 72v but its icy and wet at the moment so i'm not missing much, besides im taking the time to find some serious upgrades so that she's really ready for spring

cheers

For pricing contact Mark ( teamhybrid@btinternet.com ). He did tell me the pricing a few weeks ago but I didn't write it down, though I remember it was very reasonable for the amount of power you get.
The modified x'lyte controllers are a bit more than they were before, but the upgrades are well worth the extra cost, giving you a pretty bulletproof controller.
I'm sure Mark will be updating the puma motor page of his website now he has a firm product to sell.

Deec, hopefully the motors will be here around xmas, i'll get one over here as soon as I can after the xmas rush and take some snaps for the forum.

Fechter has a motor now too, and will soon be doing all kinds of radical testing with it in his Scoot

Evtech in Texas has a BMC geared hub kit without the batteries for $600us
I wonder how different they are to "ezee" kits available at "ebikes.ca"? They sure look the same in a lot of ways :|

But neither is the Puma.

I don't think you will find anything smaller than a 13t freewheel to screw on to a standard thread hub. Anything less than 13t would need a smaller hole.

Ideed, I found that out. Only chance is to make an adapter for a smaller screw fitting, but that takes up more space still:(

hey jozzer,

yes have been thinking about gearing myself as soon as i hit the throttle my pedals are useless hehehehe.
Even though i could fit a 3 speed in no problem i have the issue of not having enough clearence for a derailuer so im thinking maybe i would be better off looking at changing the front ring ???

cheers

Idd deec, I always put a 53 tooth or bigger on the front. Only one rear gear is really necassary with a motor that pulls this good from a standstill :D

Anybody that uses electric bikes knows how pedaling saves power for distance in a big way, especially on long flat runs, steep hills, or starting out the gate. A little goes a long way.
Try for three gears at least in the back. You can spend hundreds more on batteries, or just pedal a bit. The More gears you have the more chance of using them and going further. Five gears has been the minimum for years though.
Maybe i'm from a small group that uses my bike for longer distances and shopping trips. My car stay's parked for weeks at a time in the summer. Can't wait :)

Somebody makes a planetary geared FRONT chainring. I forget where I saw this. Not cheap, but would be a great solution to the problem.

That would be the Schlumpf http://www.greenspeed.com.au/schlumpf.html . Made to Swiss watch precision and priced accordingly, around 600 clams US.

Yikes!

I could just get bigger batteries for that much.

No kidding. I looked at this option a while back and crapped nuggets once I saw the price tag. That was almost as bad as when I bought my bike, it was $14,000 but at least I got a free new car with it. Or was that the other way around?

Like they say " If you have to ask how much it costs you probably can't afford it".

yeah this is the reason i spent cash on a road crankset for my bike - to allow higher gearing.

Indeed, anyone wanting full use of 7 speed freewheel had better wait for the next batch of motors. Using the pedals to help you accellerate is not a problem, what would be the problem is pedaling when the bike is doing 25mph+.

So, Fechter....we hear you've got one of these beasts, (Puma) anything to report yet :?:

Not yet. It's still in the box.

I'm looking for a rim, then spokes, then batteries, etc.
It will be a while before I get a ride test.

Hi,

looking forward to seeing what you think Richard, do you know which version you have there?
I think jozzer is going to post some pictures of the "new" pumas shortly as soon as Mark gets them in (any day now i think).

Cheers

We sent fechter the last revision of the 260RPM motor. Same generation of motor as the 320rpm on knoxies last vids (on the BMX with dual controllers etc)

I'll get a road test and vid up as soon as I get me hands on one...

Steve

oh ok,

yes mate please do, lets see what these new boys can do
By the way whats yoour going rate to build me A123 packs to fit my cages? ;)

cheers
